L’investissement et les infrastructures sont politiques. Ensemble, ils déterminent la manière de produire, les schèmes de consommation, l’organisation de la vie sociale, et bien plus. Il est difficile, par exemple, de se déplacer entièrement sans voiture sur un territoire dont la planification urbaine a historiquement été orientée autour de son utilisation. Les investissements actuels et leur matérialisation dans des infrastructures commandent à long terme des pratiques sociales et une demande énergétique déterminée. 

Au Québec comme ailleurs, la capacité d’investissement est aujourd’hui fortement concentrée entre les mains de quelques grandes entreprises desquelles dépendent de plus en plus les États. Leurs investissements créent des sentiers de dépendance, lesquels évacuent certaines transformations socioécologiques possibles.

Les récentes années ont vu le gouvernement caquiste annoncer de nouveaux projets industriels et extractifs, justifiés au nom de la transition écologique (filière batterie, mines de lithium, production d’hydrogène). Or, les groupes environnementaux québécois ont démontré qu’une transition énergétique ne peut se faire sans se baser sur des critères de justice, de démocratie et de résilience écologique, lesquels ne semblent pas être réunis dans le Projet Saint-Laurent de Legault.

Par cet atelier participatif animé par l'atelier d'Écologie Sociale du Capitalisme Avancé (ESCA), nous souhaitons mettre en lumière les fondements politiques du rapport entre l’investissement (privé et public), la formation d’infrastructures matérielles/énergétiques et l’organisation socioécologique du Québec à long terme. L’atelier commencera par une mise en contexte politique et économique qui mettra la table pour des débats en petits groupes, l’idée étant de laisser place à la délibération politique spontanée.

The Great Transition mandates a move away from the current systems of oppression under which both humans and nonhuman nature are exploited. This two-part discussion aims to invigorate post-capitalist, anti-imperialist, post-anthropocentric, and pluriversal solidarities from theory to praxis while centering worldviews and ways of being from the margins of the world. In many such cases, solidarity and a sense of a collective are integral to worldviews and lifeways not rooted in the individualism of Euro-centric modernity. These solidarities often extend beyond the human–as Timothy Morton claims, “It’s not just that you can have solidarity with nonhumans. It’s that solidarity implies nonhumans. Solidarity requires nonhumans” (2019, 189)–hence our focus on “eco-social” solidarity. Grounded in a pluriversal perspective, these two consecutive, complementary sessions offer brief exchanges on worldviews and theories for eco-social solidarities, followed by facilitated explorations of strategies to inspire radical eco-centered action, reciprocation, and liberation. Session 1 (9 - 10:30 am) introduces degrowth, eco-socialism and the non-human, and ecological law. Session 2 (11 am - 12:30 pm) turns to Ubuntu, peace and reconciliation, and modes and contradictions of solidarity. What would eco-social solidarity look, feel, and be like in practice? While capitalism, imperialism, and colonialism make and remake the rifts between humans, other humans, and the rest of nature, alternatives to these systems of oppression offer possibilities for repair and flourishing.

This panel explores Indigenous resistance movements within Canada's settler colonial context, highlighting the solidarities that can emerge between Indigenous peoples and the working class.

This communication will provide an accessible history and theorization of historical and ongoing Indigenous struggles against capitalist, extractive energy infrastructures in what is now called Canada. Putting Dene, Métis, and Inuit struggles against the Mackenzie Valley Pipeline proposals in the 1970s into conversation with ongoing Wet’suwet’en struggles against TC Energy's Coastal GasLink pipeline, the talk will address the imbrication of settler colonialism, energy infrastructure, and capitalism in Canada's political economy, where capitalism remains intimately bound with expressions of settler colonialism through ongoing dispossession that, through energy infrastructure projects, is promised as proletarianization. The larger point of discussion that will be raised pertains to the necessity of nurturing solidarities between Indigenous peoples and the working class--solidarities between land and labour--in anti-capitalist struggle today.

I look at Wet'suwet'en resistance against the CGL pipeline and argue that an anti-capitalist alliance between Indigenous, environmental, and labour movements is possible by bringing land to the center of theorizing exploitation and oppression. In other words,  the struggle against the extractivist settler-colonial capitalist system, movements can build solidarity by undoing the bases of the capitalist system, which Marx (1990) explains in the critique of primitive accumulation as the processes of separation from means of production, means of subsistence, and land. 

            I first explain that the accumulation of land as private property and resources is one of the three main pillars of creating a capitalist class system. Second, I focus on the processes of alienation from the land that includes, (1) the separation of workers and communities from land, led to (2) alienation from land and nature, therefore, (3) land based subsistence practices of reproduction were disrupted and in most cases forgotten, (4) land and nature turn to commodity. Third, I explain the gap in the organic relationship of human nature was filled by nationalism to sustain a capitalist state structure instead of land and nature. Fourth, I explain that bringing land to the center of our movements is essential for a radical anti-capitalist alliance of Indigenous, environmental, and labour movements not just as a good strategy but as one of the main pillars of emancipation from current oppressive structures and systems.

In 2019 and early 2020, national and global social movements seemed to be gathering steam; in the Canadian state, a surging climate justice movement mobilized in solidarity with Wet'suwet'en land defenders to create remarkable new bonds between settler and Indigenous forces. Such movements, demobilized and disorganized by the COVID-19 pandemic, have since reassembled in contradictory ways, particularly in the past year and catalyzed primarily by the movement for Palestinian liberation.

This discussion asks: how might we understand the causal links and historical leaps that have characterized these past five years? The initial emergency period of the ongoing COVID pandemic is sometimes treated as a gap or pause in an otherwise unbroken sequence of escalating struggles, but a closer look suggests more complicated effects. There are signs that much of the electoral and labour left has drifted rightwards; meanwhile, an important counter-tendency exists within the movement for a free Palestine, which has absorbed—while transforming—many of the climate justice and anti-colonial organizing energies of 2019-20.

As organizers, editors, and writers, our panelists are associated with such projects as Midnight Sun Magazine, Spectre Journal, Tempest Collective, and the Immigrant Workers Centre in Montreal. Join us to reflect on where our movements have been and where they may be going next.

Bien que les tarifs d’électricité soient relativement bas, de nombreuses personnes éprouvent des difficultés à payer leur facture d’électricité. Au Québec, 16% de la population est en situation de précarité énergétique. Autrement dit, un ménage sur sept éprouve des difficultés à avoir l’énergie nécessaire dans son logement pour satisfaire ses besoins de base ou y arrive au détriment d’autres besoins essentiels. La précarité énergétique est la combinaison de trois causes : manque de revenu, mauvaises conditions de logement et coût élevé de l’énergie. 

C’est un problème encore plus important aujourd’hui alors que le Québec traverse trois crises majeures qui exacerbent chacune le problème : la crise climatique, la crise du logement et la « crise » énergétique.

Au Québec, le chauffage et la climatisation peuvent être une question de vie ou de mort. La vague de chaleur de juillet 2018 a causé directement la mort de 210 personnes. L’amélioration de la performance énergétique des logements est donc cruciale pour lutter contre la précarité énergétique. Toutefois, les rénovations visant la performance énergétique des bâtiments peuvent entraîner « rénovictions », hausses de loyer et donc, un déplacement de la population d’origine d’un quartier. Pour une transition juste, on doit s’intéresser à cette question. 

Pour la discussion, l’ACEF du Nord de Montréal souhaite réfléchir avec les participant.e.s autour de la question suivante : quelles mesures pourraient être mises en place pour que tous et toutes vivent dans un logement sain, efficace énergétiquement, tout en s’assurant de ne pas exacerber involontairement les inégalités sociales?

The revival of social reproduction theory (SRT) represents one of the most dynamic and concrete terrains of debate in Marxism today, and struggles over social reproduction have been some of the most militant and effective in recent years. This series of three panels engages in these debates and explores the role of social reproduction in capitalist value production, the relationship between forms of exploitation and systems of oppression, and how social reproduction struggles have been expressed in current times. By considering capitalism as a social totality, sites of social reproduction and life-making will be discussed as important spaces for both working-class formation and potential struggle.

This first panel focuses on how value is produced and subjects formed under capitalism, and the theoretical knots that must be unpicked to understand the broader implications of these processes for left strategy. Analyses of what types of labour produce value – and the role of nature in its production – are essential for analyzing the types of worker subjects and class formations generated by different labour processes, including in domestic work and its relation to race and gender. Likewise, the utilization of certain classed-subjects in a given realm of production calls into question why particular capitals want particular types of worker. Ultimately, these are questions of how subjectivity is formed through class, and as to how other axes of subject-formation can be understood through analysis grounded in class. Answering these questions in relation to the current conjuncture, and understanding their unfolding historically, is crucial.

The necessity of history either sends theory-debates of a previous era packing or reanimates them with new categories and different stakes. Either way, ideas and the debates are a map of the historical ground from which they emerge. What historical dynamics animated the debates between Marxist and poststructuralist critiques in the 1990s? How was the ongoing development of these dynamics expressed in a revival of Marxist theorizing after the 1990s – a revival that continues to gather momentum twenty-five years on? Why have theoretical categories such as totality, value and surplus moved to the heart of Marxist theorizing in the course of this revival, largely dissolving the terms that animated those earlier debates? What has become of the intervention of the critique of totality, of difference, and the semiotic turn toward the politics of representation as a means of redressing what Stuart Hall called the great evasions of Marxism? Did that intervention run its course in the ensuing barbarisms of globalization, neoliberalism and financialization? Or has the critique of totality that once set class struggle against the figure of revolutionary resistance by “new subjects of history of a nonclass type” become the new currency of critiques of racial capitalism? Is the new consensus that capitalism requires group differentiation for its reproduction the reason why contemporary Marxist theory no longer seems to wring its hands over accusations of determinism or economic reductionism? This paper will turn these questions into some historicizing propositions.

Drawing on fieldwork carried out with Guatemalan migrant farmworkers in Canada and  communities within Guatemala itself, this paper explores worker subjectivity within the labour-process of transnational agriculture from the perspectives of alienation, mute compulsion and social reproduction.

The paper is rooted in understanding of migrant workers as bearers of the commodity labour-power, which they are compelled to sell on the labour market either in their country of origin or in receiving states. While this labour is nominally ‘free’, it takes place under the ‘mute compulsion of economic relations’. By paying attention to such mute compulsion, we are thus drawn to analyze the social context which creates such economic relations – structural forces of power and politics, the uneven structuring of the world economy and the nature of the labour process across multiple sites of work.

Yet such a structural analysis, while necessary, elides a crucial part of the story – that of worker self-understanding, their subjectivity. As human beings, workers have complex and multifaceted understandings of their roles, the choices available to them, their experiences within the workplace and the structural constraints that they face in trying to meet the subsistence needs of themselves and their families.

Investigating subjectivity on its own is not enough, but neither is analysis focused solely on the level of structure. In working to bridge the two and analyze them in interplay, this paper attends to the abstract theoretical implications for understanding migrant labour in the contemporary world economy, while centring the concrete of Guatemalan farmworker experiences.

Social Reproduction Theory (SRT) has historically focused on the link between gender oppression and capitalism. It has done so most notably by uncovering the fundamental importance of both unpaid and paid work in the reproduction of the commodity labour-power. By focusing on human labour as life-making, SRT not only recognizes care as necessary labour, it also complexifies our understanding of what capitalism is and how it reproduces. However, SRT focuses almost exclusively on the role of human labour, which means it has been much less attentive to the role of Nature as a form of care and replenishment. This paper seeks to expand SRT further by studying how capitalist alienation entails estrangement from land and nature, thus revealing the fundamental implications of how we understand the limits of social reproduction. In order to achieve this, I analyze territorial alienation in Québec, arguing that social reproduction is greatly limited by the commodification of space that forecloses access to nature. Ongoing enclosures in Québec demonstrate how access to the public domain has become impossible for the majority, thus limiting how people can find spaces away from capital.

The study of value theory has been reanimated in the past decades in an effort to understand, from a Marxist perspective, the actual movement of capitalist social formations and reproduction. Within debates on feminism and gender, capitalist reproduction is contrasted with social reproduction to indicate two separate but interdependent processes: waged labour and unwaged subsistence activities. By understanding ‘value’ in a specific way—the social substance that attaches to commodities in the production process via human labour—, this article addresses if and how waged domestic labour produces value as part of the service sector and contrasts it with how unwaged domestic chores play a role in the economy. Following Marx, only waged labour can produce value—or aggrandize someone’s wealth. Social reproduction theorists have already explained this process against autonomists’ theorization that unwaged domestic activities—cleaning, cooking, caring—also produce value as these activities produce the commodity labour power. What about waged domestic labour? Can it produce value in the form of profit? Looking at domestic labour in both waged and unwaged formats reveals deep-seated social formations around paid and unpaid, free and unfree labour that ground other than exploitative forms of oppression’s articulation in the social fabric, such as but not limited to race and gender.

La politique des lombalgies.

Plusieurs personnes voient leur trajectoire de vie modifiée de façon irréversible à la suite d’une affection de la colonne.  Bien qu’il demeure des questions scientifiques non-résolues, tant l’organisation du travail que le fonctionnement du système de santé capitalistes nuisent à la guérison des lombalgies. Ceci concerne non seulement les victimes d’accidents de travail mais aussi toute autre personne affligée par ces problèmes, et il est ainsi nécessaire d’avoir une vue d’ensemble sur la question. Cette présentation abordera à travers des exemples tirés de la vie quotidienne les principaux facteurs sociaux et organisationnels qui entrent en jeu. Un des obstacles à la guérison est l’existence d’une idéologie négationniste au sein du discours médical, idéologie qui contribue à désarmer politiquement les patients et à invalider leurs revendications dans la lutte pour la reconnaissance du caractère objectif de leur condition.  Aussi, l’impact de ces blessures musculaires et squelettiques est totalement absent du discours publique, jamais abordé par les politiciens ni les médias, malgré leur caractère omniprésent et leur effet au quotidien sur nos vies et celles de nos proches. Les parties prenantes n’ont ainsi pas à rendre de comptes face à la “gestion” sociale de ces conditions médicales. Cet atelier interactif vise à corriger cette situation par le partage d’informations qui faciliteront la prise de parole sur l’espace publique et les demandes pour des actions concrètes et des solutions satisfaisantes face à ces problèmes.

À l’ère des changements climatiques et des polycrises qui affectent nos sociétés, le réseau de la santé publique du Québec doit se réinventer. Au-delà du ton prescriptif, souvent inspiré d’approches autoritaires, les interventions de santé publique doivent être planifiées par, pour et avec les populations. Des acteurs de santé publique provenant de plusieurs régions du Québec sont mobilisés pour réfléchir autrement la réponse aux changements structurels en cours. Ils souhaitent accompagner les communautés dans la transition socio-écologique et vers de nouvelles logiques décisionnelles. Pour ce faire, ils ont démarré un collectif qui explore diverses avenues d’accompagnement de la transition socio-écologique. Ce collectif co-construit sa pensée et tisse des alliances stratégiques, notamment avec le réseau naissant Multitudes. Sa démarche se veut décoloniale, participative et ancrée dans une perspective post-capitaliste. Son thème central est la résilience pour faire face à l’inconnu et se transformer. Il regarde la réalité en face, explorant ce que peut impliquer un effondrement de la modernité, et soutenant l’émergent. Il embrasse la sévérité de la situation. Ses méthodes incluent des cercles de parole, l’auto-ethnographie, l’auto-réflexivité et l’expérimentation par la pratique. Son approche est ancrée dans le corps et le cœur autant que la raison. Cet atelier visera à décrire la démarche du collectif et à recueillir les propositions issues de divers horizons pour multiplier les partenaires et nous inviter aux prochaines étapes, dans une perspective critique et constructive.

Rêver l’ère post-capitaliste permet d’envisager un monde dans lequel nos collectivités auront su s’adapter, résorber ou répondre aux enjeux sociaux et environnementaux inhérents à nos systèmes actuels. Dans notre vie quotidienne ou pour créer des utopies réelles, les communs sont souvent envisagés comme des avenues possibles pour recréer l’esprit de communauté qui favorise l’émergence de la coopération, de la communalisation, de l’autoproduction ou de la démocratisation.

Soutenus par des valeurs de partage, de convivialité, de participation et d’inclusion, les communs sont définis comme des communautés qui décident ensemble des usages qui seront fait d’une ressource, matérielle ou non, de laquelle on doit prendre soin pour assurer le mieux-être de chacun.e. Ils émergent souvent dans des situations de précarisation qui menacent le bien-être collectif. Il n’est donc pas étranger aux luttes sociales ou aux initiatives locales qui permettent de revendiquer une justice sociale, politique, économique ou environnementale.

Ce panel propose différents récits, initiatives ou rêves pour réinventer notre rapport au travail, à l’accaparement, à l’éducation, à l’occupation territoriale ou à l’alimentation. Il explore des initiatives et luttes qui ont su creuser des interstices pour morceler ces systèmes qui tendent à nous diviser et à nous individualiser. Il propose un espoir au cœur des interventions transformatrices qui (ré)enchantent et (ré)inventent notre monde et s'interroge : Comment construire des ponts entre ces histoires de luttes et d’initiatives ? Pouvons-nous proposer une nouvelle articulation théorique entre ces deux facettes ? 

Nous tenterons de créer ces liens à partir d’exemples concrets et situés.

Cette présentation explorera le rôle fondamental des communs de la connaissance mais aussi de la production et de la jouissance de communs qui peuvent être des espaces, des équipements, des projets, des réseaux de sociabilité et d’interconnaissance dans l’émergence de technologies plus conviviales et plus démocratiques. Dans un contexte d’injustice épistémique, de déploiement de technologies autoritaires et énergivores, il importe de s’intéresser aux alternatives même balbutiantes qui permettent d’imaginer et de débattre la place qui devait être occupée par certaines technologies dans un monde plus juste et soutenable. Que ce soit dans certains makerspaces à Barcelone ou ailleurs, dans des mobilisations liées au « data activism », aux abus algorithmiques dans les services publics, à l’accaparement des ressources foncières, territoriales, énergétiques par les centres de données, d’autres usages et d’autres finalités des technologies sont inventés. Nous verrons donc comment les communs constituent d’un côté une opportunité pour la participation d’un plus grand nombre de citoyens à un renouvellement des réflexions et des pratiques liées aux technologies numériques et d’un autre côté le socle sur lequel s’appuient ces expérimentations démocratiques technocentrées.

Depuis 2020, le monde traverse une crise sanitaire qui touche gravement les couches les plus vulnérables de la population. Dans des pays comme le Brésil, ces populations ont connu une baisse de leur qualité de vie en raison de la précarité des services publics urbains liés notamment à la mobilité, au logement et à l'assainissement. Et pourtant, le pays dispose, depuis 1988, d'une Constitution très avancée à laquelle fut ajouté en 2001 un chapitre sur la question urbaine. Avec l'approbation du Congrès national, cette règlementation a permis le développement d'un instrument d'action favorable aux villes qui définit la nature sociale de la propriété foncière urbaine; l'«Estatuto da Cidade».

L'objet de cette présentation sera de démontrer que ce cadre institutionnel, basé sur la lutte pour le droit à la ville, n’a pas réussi à surmonter le paradigme du néolibéralisme urbain, hégémonique depuis les 40 dernières années. Nous soutenons que seul un nouveau paradigme, basé sur l’approche des  communs, peut supplanter le modèle néolibéral de gestion urbaine. Pour appuyer notre affirmation, nous référerons, du côté du modèle de gestion néolibéral, les exemples des Opérations Urbaines mises en œuvre dans les villes, puis, du point de vue des communs, ceux des luttes du Mouvement des Travailleurs Sans Terre, de la défense du Tarif Zéro et des occupations urbaines (mouvement Ocupe Estelita à Recife). L’avenir des villes dépend donc de la capacité des luttes des mouvements sociaux à imposer leurs agendas au sein des politiques publiques brésiliennes.

Nous discuterons de la prémisse selon laquelle la méthode pragmatique de l’expérimentation serait propice à la démocratisation, à l’attractivité ainsi qu’à la pérennité des initiatives de communs. Pour ce faire, nous nous appuierons dans un premier temps sur la théorie de John Dewey et de Joëlle Zask pour présenter cette « méthode de l’expérimentation ». Nous montrerons que cette perspective et la pratique qui y correspond pourraient en théorie participer au développement dynamique et démocratique  d’initiatives et de projets tels que les communs. Elles doteraient en outre les communs d’une capacité d’adaptation des plus dynamiques en donnant une place centrale non seulement au but visé ou anticipé du projet, mais aussi aux expériences vécues (antérieures et présentes) des acteur.trice.s qui les mettent en œuvre. Nous compléterons cette perspective théorique en présentant quelques données empiriques récoltées au sein d’un commun (la Cité Écologique) qui montrent que la méthode de l’expérimentation, si elle empêche l’absolutisme et favorise la résilience des projets alternatifs, nécessite un travail parfois improductif et la plupart du temps laborieux. Nous serons alors en mesure de discuter du paradoxe que rencontrent la plupart – sinon l’ensemble – des communs, et qui concerne d’un côté « l’efficacité » du projet, et d’un autre côté, son caractère pluraliste et démocratique.

Au cours des années 1970 et 1980, le Québec a été marqué par une série d’expériences autogestionnaires dans le secteur manufacturier, parmi lesquelles Tricofil occupe une place emblématique. Ces initiatives ont nourri une réflexion ambitieuse sur une utopie autogestionnaire ouvrière et nationale, articulée autour de la décentralisation politique et de l’appropriation collective des moyens de production. Malgré leur échec, ces projets ont inspiré une riche production intellectuelle et militante qui a influencé les imaginaires sociaux de l’époque. Cependant, avec le déclin de ces initiatives, ce courant de pensée s’est graduellement effacé au profit de perspectives moins centrées sur la production.

Cette présentation propose de revisiter le discours autogestionnaire ouvrier du Québec des années 1970-1980, en s’intéressant particulièrement aux aspirations industrielles et nationales qui le structuraient. En nous appuyant sur ces expériences historiques, nous examinerons comment ces utopies peuvent aujourd’hui nourrir notre réflexion sur la gestion des communs à haute intensité en capital.

Idéalement, tous les communs seraient écoféministes et même transféministes. Mais les données empiriques nous montrent que ce n'est pas le cas et que les valeurs et pratiques féministes sont rarement pensées ou mises en œuvre dans les initiatives de communs mixtes (Levy, Alberio & Plachesi, 2024). La notion environnementale et les impacts des initiatives de commun du Nord global sur le Sud global, sont quasi inexistants. Le fait qu'une communauté soit organisée comme un commun ne signifie pas automatiquement qu'il n'y a pas de hiérarchie. La question est de savoir comment les commoneuses et commeurs gèrent ces hiérarchies et ce qu'ils changent pour s'en affranchir. Qui nettoie les toilettes ? Se demander qui s'occupe du nettoyage et de l'entretien des autres et de leur environnement est souvent révélateur.

Pourquoi ces questions sont-elles rarement posées dans la littérature sur les communs ? Serait-ce parce que la plupart des recherches publiées sont effectuées par des hommes de pays du Nord global qui citent les travaux d'autres hommes. Et ce, malgré les publications de chercheures telles que Maria Mies et Veronika Bennholdt-Thomsen (2000, 2001). En effet, ces deux chercheures soulignent que la production de communs exige d'abord une transformation profonde de la vie quotidienne, y compris des relations patriarcales, afin de recombiner ce que la division sociale du travail dans le capitalisme a séparé. Cette communication analyse la reproduction des rapports patriarcaux dans les communs et explore des pratiques féministes, écoféministes et intersectionnelles à intégrer dans les expériences des communs.

La crise environnementale actuelle met en lumière une réalité troublante : six des neuf frontières planétaires, essentielles à la vie sur terre, sont déjà franchies, en grande partie à cause de nos systèmes alimentaires industriels et extractivistes. Dans ce contexte, les communs alimentaires se posent comme une alternative éventuelle, mais sont-ils réellement capables de relever les défis associés à ces enjeux?

Les communs alimentaires, ces ressources gérées collectivement par les communautés, redéfinissent la manière dont nous produisons, distribuons et consommons notre nourriture. Ancrées dans des approches comme la permaculture, l’agroécologie et le biorégionalisme, ces initiatives tentent de favoriser la résilience locale. Cependant, pour répondre pleinement aux enjeux environnementaux, elles devront prendre en compte des éléments clés : la préservation de la biodiversité, la gestion durable des sols et de l’eau, les changements climatiques ainsi que la réduction des flux biogéochimiques liés aux polluants chimiques.

Cette communication propose de questionner l’impact des communs alimentaires sur les frontières planétaires dépassées. Quels ingrédients doivent être intégrés pour garantir leur efficacité environnementale? Et comment ces systèmes peuvent-ils évoluer pour contribuer à un modèle alimentaire qui respecte les limites de notre planète? En explorant des exemples concrets, nous chercherons à évaluer les potentialités et les limites des communs alimentaires comme réponse collective aux défis écologiques.

Les communs urbains visent à fournir une forme alternative de gouvernance urbaine et de vie différente de celle de l'État ou de la propriété privée. Ils commencent avec des collectifs de base ou des groupes communautaires qui détiennent des valeurs progressistes et/ou de gauche qu'ils souhaitent traduire en pratiques urbaines durables démontrant qu'une autre ville est possible et souhaitable. Cette communication présente l'étude de cas de LABAS dans la ville de Bologne, qui gère un commun urbain comme plateforme militante et qui fait partie d'un réseau militant plus large contestant les politiques néolibérales et les décisions politiques et économiques réactionnaires. Mais cette expérience offre également des services à l'une des populations les plus marginalisées de la ville, les immigrés et les réfugiés. Cet article explorera la façon dont l'idée des communs de LABAS combine les luttes d'aujourd'hui et l'organisation de la base avec la mairie sociale autogérée (Municipio Sociale Autogestito).

Since 2021, the group AFTER THE END OF ART has been conducting graphic and spatial occupations in response to Brazil's social, political, and economic crisis under a conservative government, exploring the concept of the "commune" as collective organizations opposed to capitalism and its artistic expressions. In an issue of seLecT magazine, the group examined topics like piracy, the Rojava commune, school occupations in São Paulo, quilombola movements, and Teatro Oficina, producing 8-10 analog pages per topic. At Banca Meio Vermelha, they researched revolutionary graphic production in an antifascist, anticapitalist space, highlighting aesthetics in politics.

DFA’s activities also question the artist's social role in a neoliberal society, fostering collaborative and decentralized practices. In projects like "La Barricada" in Mexico City and "Oro Negro" at the V Bienal del Sur, they emphasized the tension between art’s public and institutional spaces and the resistance to commercialization. For the event "La Gran Transición: Reawakening Postcapitalist Solidarities," DFA proposes a mobile structure to circulate the city, integrating low-cost graphic and audiovisual materials, reflecting knowledge exchange and cultural improvisation.

The group aims to use public space for dialogue and confrontation, engaging spontaneously with passersby in strategic Montreal locations. This approach makes the creative process accessible and shared, culminating in political and social reflections throughout the event.

Proposal: Native Seedbomb Workshop – Decolonizing Land Through Indigenous Reclamation

This workshop introduces participants to the concept of native seedbombs, a practical and symbolic act of environmental and social resistance. Seedbombing uses native seeds to rewild urban spaces and reconnect humans with the land. In this workshop, I will share Indigenous knowledge related to native plants and ecological restoration and encourage reflection on how decolonization can take root through environmental stewardship.

Participants will learn to make seedbombs using locally Indigenous plant species, exploring how these plants support biodiversity, food sovereignty, and climate resilience. We will examine how such small-scale actions such as planting native can advance the dismantling of settler frameworks of land exploitation and initiate grassroots movements that prioritize community care, environmental justice, and the perpetuation of Indigenous cultures.

By embedding ourselves in the act of land reclamation, we challenge colonial land ownership models and take a stand against environmental degradation. The workshop will open a dialogue on how decolonial practices can form the foundation for broader post-capitalist solidarity, enabling communities to build fairer, more sustainable futures. This activity offers an ecologically impactful, actionable way to support the Great Transition’s vision of dismantling systems of oppression and revitalizing our environments.

The Great Transition mandates a move away from the current systems of oppression under which both humans and nonhuman nature are exploited. This two-part discussion aims to invigorate post-capitalist, anti-imperialist, post-anthropocentric, and pluriversal solidarities from theory to praxis while centering worldviews and ways of being from the margins of the world. In many such cases, solidarity and a sense of a collective are integral to worldviews and lifeways not rooted in the individualism of Euro-centric modernity. These solidarities often extend beyond the human–as Timothy Morton claims, “It’s not just that you can have solidarity with nonhumans. It’s that solidarity implies nonhumans. Solidarity requires nonhumans” (2019, 189)–hence our focus on “eco-social” solidarity. Grounded in a pluriversal perspective, these two consecutive, complementary sessions offer brief exchanges on worldviews and theories for eco-social solidarities, followed by facilitated explorations of strategies to inspire radical eco-centered action, reciprocation, and liberation. Session 1 (9 - 10:30 am) introduces degrowth, eco-socialism and the non-human, and ecological law. Session 2 (11 am - 12:30 pm) turns to Ubuntu, peace and reconciliation, and modes and contradictions of solidarity. What would eco-social solidarity look, feel, and be like in practice? While capitalism, imperialism, and colonialism make and remake the rifts between humans, other humans, and the rest of nature, alternatives to these systems of oppression offer possibilities for repair and flourishing.

Le développement rapide de l'intelligence artificielle (IA) est étroitement lié aux logiques néocoloniales et néolibérales à l'œuvre à l'échelle mondiale, renforçant les injustices et les formes de domination. Ces systèmes exacerbent les inégalités, notamment économiques, raciales et de genre, tout en contribuant à la crise environnementale à travers des infrastructures énergivores et des déchets numériques. L'opacité et la complexité des systèmes d'IA forment une barrière au dialogue collectif, participant à l'érosion des fondements démocratiques.

Nous proposons un atelier collaboratif d’une durée de deux heures, sous le format d’une fresque. Après une brève introduction pour établir un vocabulaire commun, les participant·e·s travailleront en sous-groupes pour créer une « fresque » critique de l’IA, reliant des cartes qui révèlent les liens entre technologie, exploitation et domination. Cet atelier mettra en lumière les enjeux sociaux et environnementaux de la transformation par l’IA des données humaines en ressources exploitables, une réalité que certains comprennent comme un nouveau stade du capitalisme.

Enfin, les participant·e·s seront invité·e·s à identifier des points de convergence entre la lutte pour la justice des données et d’autres luttes sociales, telles que la justice climatique, les droits des travailleuses et travailleurs, ou encore la lutte contre les discriminations raciales et de genre. Cet atelier se conclura par une réflexion critique sur les stratégies d’action pour résister aux effets néfastes de l’IA dans une optique individuelle et collective et mettre en place des systèmes technologiques plus équitables et inclusifs.

Le système économique capitaliste repose sur une dynamique internationale d’extraction des ressources naturelles qui implique l’exploitation et l’expulsion des travailleurs du Sud global par des méthodes assimilables à de l’esclavage moderne et du travail informel (Bagnardi, 2023; Fuchs, 2013; Sassen, 2014). Pour les travailleurs du Nord global, cela se traduit par la remise en cause de villes industrielles construites par des entreprises privées (communément appelés company towns) et dont l’activité économique repose sur l’extraction et la transformation de minerais (Céré, 2023). Ces interrelations ne génèrent toutefois pas systématiquement des solidarités ou des coalitions d’intérêts et les récits sur la transition juste présentent généralement une vision nationale et sectorielle d’un syndicalisme écologique revendiquant des politiques industrielles et des mécanismes de dialogue social (Thomas, 2021), nécessitant la construction de convergences (Stevis, 2023). La critique des énergies fossiles (pétrole et charbon et la promotion des énergies renouvelables (éolien, hydroélectricité) et de l’électrification (voitures électriques) croisent la montée d’une conscientisation écologique paradoxale dans les secteurs miniers et industriels : les minerais et métaux étant essentiels et critiques pour assurer la transition énergétique (Hache & Louvet, 2023; Izoard, 2024).

Le ciment de nos sociétés actuelles reposent sur les récits capitalistes et les victoires individuelles relayés par la culture américaine. The revival of social reproduction theory (SRT) represents one of the most dynamic and concrete terrains of debate in Marxism today, and struggles over social reproduction have been some of the most militant and effective in recent years. This series of three panels engages in these debates and explores the role of social reproduction in capitalist value production, the relationship between forms of exploitation and systems of oppression, and how social reproduction struggles have been expressed in current times. By considering capitalism as a social totality, sites of social reproduction and life-making will be discussed as important spaces for both working-class formation and potential struggle.

This second panel focuses on the tension between the reproduction of the working class and the reproduction of capital. The contradiction between life-making processes of care which sustain us on the one hand, and the capitalist relations of exploitation and oppression that dominate us on the other, represents a central contradiction of capitalism today. Panellists will examine this relationship between reproductive labour and the reproduction of capitalism, the ways that this labour has been transformed by capitalism, and the effects of capitalist alienation on our creative activity. Emphasis will be placed on the labour of care and how the home is both a site of life-making and of the reproduction of capitalist relations of domination, on the erotic dimensions of capitalist alienation, and on the importance of social reproductive struggles to a project seeking to overcome this alienation.

People are deliberate makers, gaining inherent fulfillment from creatively transforming the world around them to meet their wants and needs. Through this creative labour, people at once generate and satisfy needs, developing hungers and cultivating tastes. There are important erotic dimensions to this labour, as people construct and fulfill desires for human connection and embodied satiation.

In conditions of capitalist alienation, members of the working class who are dispossessed of access to the key productive resources in society, have to turn themselves off as creative makers to engage in subordinated labour regimes, whether in employment or in reproductive labour. They learn to endure work, which becomes the means to an end (access to the requirements to sustain life) rather than inherently fulfilling in itself. The alienation of creative making has important implications not only for the experience of labour in capitalist societies, but also for the erotic dimensions of life-making.

Social reproduction theory has contributed in important ways to a more expansive understanding of human labour as life-making. Yet the erotic dimensions of alienated life-making have tended to be underexplored within the social reproduction frame. Capitalist alienation severs erotic fulfillment from deliberate making, which has important implications for the ways people organize to reproduce human life.

In Capital, Marx considers the two factors of the commodity: use-value on the one hand, value on the other. Both find their origin in labour, but while the production of use-values requires concrete and qualitatively distinct forms of labour, the production of value, the substance of the commodity form, requires abstraction from these particular forms of labour. Labour is therefore both the substance of value, the basis of the capitalist mode of production, and a transhistorical category, what Marx defines in the Economic and Philosophical Manuscripts of 1844 as the ability to consciously and creatively act on the world. The subsumption of qualitatively distinct forms of human activity to abstract labour measured as labour-time represents a historically specific separation – alienation – of the worker from both the product of their labour and their labour itself. Yet, despite capital’s efforts to fully subsume concrete labour, this process always remains incomplete.

Rather than a return to an idealized human nature, this paper conceives of the struggle against capitalist alienation as a reclamation of our current capacity for conscious, creative activity. Because social reproductive labour retains its life-making character in ways that value-producing labour does not, social reproductive struggles are particularly able to combat the alienation of capitalist society by insisting that labour be directed towards human flourishing rather than profit. This goes beyond the economic sphere, representing a politics opposed to the abstraction and quantification of our creative activity and, therefore, a struggle against the alienation of bourgeois society as a whole.

This panel analyzes the anti-racist and anti-imperialist aspects of classical Marxist thought, exploring how Lenin, Marx, and Luxemburg challenged colonialism, racial hierarchies and class oppression.

My presentation examines Lenin’s conceptualisation of racism and his anti-racist struggle. It distinguishes five elements. Firstly, Lenin argued that racism has a class root. The bourgeoise promotes racism to exploit, divide, and rule the proletariat. Lenin proposed revolutionary socialism as the solution. Second, Lenin identified proletarian racial unity as essential for achieving and maintaining socialism. Third, Lenin integrated racism into his theory of imperialism. He argued that European capitalism deployed racism to justify colonialism, with the underlying aim of accumulating capital. Fourth, Lenin played a crucial role in opposing racism. Under his leadership, Soviet Russia arose as the world’s first anti-racist state, and the Communist International prioritised anti-racism. Fifth, Leninism played a prominent role in anti-racist, anti-colonial struggles during the Soviet era. Leninist revolutionaries sought to overcome racism in Vietnam, Cuba, the US, and elsewhere. It is impossible to understand the history of anti-racism without acknowledging Lenin’s centrality in it.

The logical construction of colonial theory can be traced back to German classical philosophy, particularly in philosophers' idealist interpretations of dialectics. Kant's early defense of colonialism largely stemmed from his Eurocentric stance, his classification and valuation of human races, and his vision of a federation of states grounded in moral and legal norms. The Enlightenment's spirit of liberty often overlooked economic factors' crucial role in shaping social relationships and individual freedom. Rationality itself does not always lead to genuine freedom; rather, it may serve as a theoretical basis for oppression and exploitation. True emancipation requires moving beyond the framework of abstract rationality, focusing instead on concrete social and class struggles. Genuine freedom cannot rely solely on changes in reason and ideology but must be achieved through transforming the economic foundations of society.

Marx provides a historical-materialist methodology that transcends a Eurocentric perspective, emphasizing the class struggle across racial boundaries and the decisive role of material conditions in historical development. This vision aims for a classless, stateless communism as the ultimate goal of history, fundamentally critiquing Kant's narrow Eurocentric perspective, racial hierarchies, and his concept of a federation of states. Critiquing Kant's colonialist theoretical stance from Marx's perspective not only exposes the Eurocentric discourse structure among scholars, including Kant, but also serves as an active response to recent Western scholarly claims that Marx held Eurocentric views. Moreover, it offers a theoretical framework for understanding global inequalities in modern capitalism.

Marx argued that working-class emancipation cannot occur under occupation (Marx, et al., 1872). Marx uses terms like ‘preliminary condition,’ ‘first condition,’ and ‘in the foreground’ to characterize the place of anti-colonial resistance movements in the political strategy of the anti-capitalist left within colonial nations. If Marxism is understood as first and foremost an anti-colonial struggle, it becomes clear why Palestinian Marxists were able to develop such a rich and nuanced understanding of class formation, while the Israeli Marxist tradition has been instrumentalized by Zionists in its early state formation years to then be abandoned for a “Post-Zionist” understanding of class via racial divisions.

The paper compares class formation literature in the Israeli-Palestinian contexts to challenge the post-Zionist hegemony, arguing for the reintroduction of class as a key analytical lens. Drawing on Marxist class theory, it contributes to settler-colonial literature by framing post-Zionism as a colonial academic project that suppresses class struggle in favour of reforming Jewish ethnic hierarchies. By foregrounding class within the settler-colonial analysis, this paper provides a new perspective on the intersection of social and national struggles, highlighting the importance of class as a tool for understanding both historical and contemporary dynamics in Israel-Palestine.

The African Origins of the “Primitive Accumulation of Capital”: Rosa Luxemburg’s Writings on the Nama and Herero Revolt of 1904

While Rosa Luxemburg is widely credited as the first Marxist to argue that “the so-called primitive accumulation of capital” is a continuous feature of capitalist development rather than restricted to its origins in Western Europe, far less acknowledged is the extent to which she solidarized with indigenous struggles against colonialism and imperialism. The recent discovery of a large number heretofore unknown writings by her on the revolt against German imperialism in what is now Namibia sheds new light on this. In 2023 it was discovered that she wrote virtually every article in the he twice-weekly Polish-language newspaper Gazeta Ludowa in Poznań in 1904; each issue contained detailed articles on ongoing anti-colonial revolts in Malawi, South Africa, the Congo and the revolt of the Nama and Herero against Germany’s genocidal policies in present-day Namibia. She wanted the Polish proletarian to know what was happening in Southwest Africa—and for them to extend solidarity with African victims of German imperialism. These writings, composed at a time when few European socialists paid attention to sub-Sahara Africa, demonstrates that Luxemburg’s attentiveness to the subjective aspirations for freedom of indigenous peoples subjected to imperialism represented an innovative approach to the study of objective social structures and the dynamics of social development. This paper will discuss these and related writings, which will appear in a forthcoming volume of The Complete Works of Rosa Luxemburg.

Dans les médias, les technologies émergentes sont souvent présentées comme des solutions miracles à nos problèmes. On aborde parfois leurs conséquences néfastes et on suggère quelques mesures pour les atténuer, mais on présume que la nouvelle technologie est là pour rester, qu’on ne peut pas empêcher son implantation, comme s’il s’agissait d’une fatalité. Au sein de la gauche, on accepte fréquemment cette prémisse, en ajoutant au mieux que la technologie pourra être mise au service des humains quand elle ne sera plus contrôlée par les capitalistes.

Cette vision qui présuppose une neutralité de la technologie nous empêche d’avoir un réel débat démocratiques sur celle-ci. Or, l’apparition d'une nouvelle technologie ne se fait pas ex nihilo, mais est toujours enchevêtrée dans un environnement socio-technique particulier traversé par des enjeux matériels et des relations de pouvoir qui auront in fine des répercussions sur les structures sociales, ainsi que sur notre rapport au monde. Dans cette discussion, nous verrons comment les technologies elles-mêmes orientent le développement des sociétés. À l’encontre des systèmes techniques complexes qui nous enferment dans une logique productiviste et centralisatrice, on discutera de pistes pour des technologies conviviales et démocratiques qui nous apparaissent plus sobres, mais aussi moins fragiles et moins fragilisantes.

What does Linhart’s Le Sucre et la Faim (Minuit, 1980) reveals at the moment of its first English edition (Helsinki, Rab-Rab Press, 2023)? The book investigated a modernising experiment, a deregulatory leap in work organisation and a housing dispossession strategy enacted by large sugar plantation landowners in Northeast Brazil after the 1964 civil-military coup. Thus, it precociously dissected a capitalistic dystopia beyond wage labour. 

With a thought-provoking pace and a markedly visual content, the essay concretely scrutinised the reciprocal determination between the expansion of the sugar monoculture and the phenomenon of mass hunger as a product of capitalism: as a modern, rational, and a functional dispositif to the reproductive logic of capital. Accordingly, the portrait showed a new class strategy emerging in the sugarcane Brazilian agroindustry through an analysys that unveiled necro class practices. How did this come to be in terms of Linhart’s writing?

Was it by using far-reaching metaphors (the concentration camps and nuclear bombs as figures) employed against a background of supposedly archaic economic relationships of apparently servile or non-wage work? If so, both metaphoric constructs functioned as forms of critical intelligence, inducing historical and dialectical reflection by condensing different temporalities and historical forms, modern and archaic, advanced and backward. Anyway, by stressing and focusing on the specific functioning of aesthetic constructs and narrative techniques derived from cinema, the panel aims to offer the opportunity to investigate the interweaving between objective issues and historical aspects of the living social experience, which only come to light in art.

Drawing upon Linhart’s work on the class struggle in Algeria, his work on Lenin and Taylor, and his consideration of the historical experience Soviet New Economic Policy, my discussion considers the narrative features of “a culture of living social analysis” that we find in Linhart’s The Assembly Line and The Sugar and the Hunger.   If, as Pierre Macherey long ago argued,  the narrative text is defined by a “free necessity” which marks the work as the “point where several lines of necessity converge,” it is also a formation characterized by its secondariness: “it is a figure against a background of other formations, depending on them rather than contrasting with them” (Pierre Macherey, A Theory of Literary Production.  Trans. Geoffrey Wall, London: Routledge, 2006, pp. 46, 48, 61).  Moreover, the work is a convergence of necessity that never overcomes diversity, such that, as Macherey observes, whatever resolution it presents is “so precarious that it is obvious in the very letter of the text where incoherence and incompleteness burst forth” (Macherey 2006,174).  My discussion takes Macherey’s insights as a point of departure in order to pursue the narrative logic of Linhart’s accounts of the lived experiences of collective labour and struggle. 

The aim of this presentation is to revisit Robert Linhart’s practice of militant research and how this points not only to an original conception of Marxist theory with a strong emphasis on the role of the aspirations, demands and struggles of the subaltern classes, but also to a redefinition of the practice of militant research. To that end I will revisit Linhart’s texts, from the 1960s, with their particular emphasis on the question of transition and how this leads to the subsequent research in “Lenine, les paysants et Taylor”, but also I will try and read ‘L’etabli’ and ‘The Sugar and the Hunger’ as paradigmatic examples of militant research. Apart from reconstructing the particular practice of militant research in such texts, I will also try and see how we can relate this to other traditions of militant research such as the version of workers’ inquiry practices by operaismo. I will also stress the way Linhart insisted on the need to study the very reality of capitalist production as both material process but also lived experience of the working classes, and how this was both a theoretical and political strategic choice On the basis of this approach I will try to stress how such a practice of militant research informed a version of Marxism that is very attentive to the actuality, complexity, and unevenness of subaltern struggles and movements. Join members of the Black Rose / Rosa Negra (BRRN) Anarchist Federation for a conversation about politics, strategy, and organizing in the multiple crises we face in the 21st century. BRRN is a revolutionary North American anarchist federation that has a decade of experience organizing in mass movements in the United States.  Coming from this experience we have recently produced a political program to help guide our work of building popular anarchism and composing a block of oppressed classes to better fight capitalism, imperialism, white supremacy, patriarchy, and ecocide.  

BRRN members will present on our program, but we are here in be in conversation and learn from movement militants in Montreal about the nature and composition of struggle here, and how we can better be in solidarity. Join us for a participatory workshop as we not only discuss our program, but walk participants through how they can build their own program through a sequence of steps, from conjunctural analysis to a strategic plan to tactical implementation.

The availability of generative AI tools to the public in late 2022 sparked significant interest and discussion. Since that time, a broad spectrum of opinions has emerged, ranging from AI optimists at one end – who expect this technology to result in positive social change (and utopian possibilities) and seek its acceleration – and AI pessimists at the other end – who expect this technology will result in negative outcomes (and possible societal collapse) and seek its pause. Despite the differences expressed in these positions, they share a common understanding of AI as a thing, a done deal, a technology to be evaluated as positive or negative. In contrast, the scholars on this panel aim to shift the discussion away from this spectrum of possibilities and into the sphere of human activity, where AI appears not as a thing to be evaluated but as “the unfolding outcome of the systemic logic of embedded material social relations” (Lewis 2024). Rather than a thing to be embraced or feared, this panel explores this technology as a site of struggle and possibilities, whose outcome is far from settled.

I’m Blue: AI Literacy in the Age of Agentic AI 

Meet Blue, our family robot – curious, introspective, and sometimes funny. Blue engages in meaningful discussions on any topic, all without requiring internet access or data storage. As a key component of our research project on generative AI, Blue not only stimulates curiosity but also helps demystify this rapidly evolving technology.

This talk examines the public’s reception of generative AI through the lens of “AI Realism” (Lewis 2024), with the goal of enhancing AI literacy as systems evolve from basic conversational chatbots to autonomous agents capable of independent action. By sharing primary research with open-source Large Language Models using applications such as Open Interpreter and AutoGPT (and with interventions by Blue), I aim to illuminate possible trajectories of this technology and the risks these developments may pose. 

Grounded in “Activity Theory” (Levant et al. 2024, Vygotsky 1978), which posits that human subjectivity is in its essence a product of social interaction rather than purely neurological processes, my approach highlights how AI agency emerges from the social practices embedded within these systems, not merely the physical hardware (Pasquinelli 2023). By situating the deployed autonomous AI agents in my case studies within activity systems (Engeström 2015), I identify their relationship to human agents and the limited, often unpredictable nature of their agency. Within this framework, I investigate differences between machine learning and human learning, exploring new directions in machine learning research (Reigeluth and Castelle 2021) and their implications for the future.

A discussion between members of politicized campus-community farming projects on the island of Tiohtià:ke (Montréal): Eleves des Champs at McGill, the Afro-Indigenous farming collective Sankofa at Concordia le CRAPAUD  at UQAM and co-op CultivAction, also at Concordia. Each one of these projects blends anti-capitalist and anti-colonial politics within their work in their own ways. Each project tries to be outwardly political in what/who they support and collaborate with and what they say, while also attempting to demonstrate a radically different vision in their everyday operations. A different vision for food production, for connection to land and for how we relate to and organize work with one another. 

Join us for a discussion about what are some of the most exciting and most challenging parts of this work are.

Les crises climatiques, de l’inégalité, du racisme systémique et autres n’ont fait que grandir sous la gouvernance d’un mouvement qui quémandent du progrès aux oligarchies dites démocratiques. Si nous voulons avoir une planète viable et une place pour tous les humains et plus qu’humains, une suite du monde tel que le capitalisme racial colonial l’a modelé est impossible. Pour la plupart des peuples, les solutions sont déjà là, il suffit de leur faire place et laisser prendre racine dans un monde qui alliera tradition ancienne à une co-construction basée sur la sollicitude, l’entraide et la libération de tous les peuples.

La conférence proposée invitera des peuples trop souvent mit de côté par les mouvements comme celui de l’action climatique.  Nous discuterons des vraies solutions établies dans le livret Trompés dans la Serre Chaude avec des personnes qui vivent et mettent en action celles-ci. Des solutions qui sont guidées par des principes, tels que: la justice écologique, la transition juste, l'organisation démocratique et la démocratie énergétique. Aussi par le savoir traditionnel autochtone, l’expérience axée sur le terrain et la science d’intérêt public. Qui bâtissent des économies solidaires répondant aux besoins écologiques et humains. Des solutions démocratiquement déterminées et gouvernées localement, qui centrent le leadership des communautés les plus affectées.

Aujourd’hui, 48 % de la population haïtienne fait face à une insécurité alimentaire aiguë, d’après le Centre national de la sécurité alimentaire. Déjà confrontées à des barrières systémiques, les femmes du secteur de l’économie informelle sont lourdement touchées. Par ailleurs, selon l’Organisation pour les migrations (OIM, 2025), on compte plus d’un million de personnes déplacées à l’intérieur du pays, dont plus de la moitié sont des enfants. 

Or la crise qui sévit en Haïti depuis 2018 trouve son origine dans une longue histoire d’inégalités socioéconomiques et d’ingérence étrangère. Dans les dernières années, l’instabilité politique a affaibli l’État et a miné sa capacité de livrer les services de base. Alors que la violence, l’insécurité et la crise humanitaires s’intensifient, de plus en plus de voix s’élèvent pour exiger une solution dirigée par les Haïtien·nes. 

Comment comprendre la réalité d’Haïti aujourd’hui ? Quels ont été les effets du projet néocolonial et des politiques qui s’y rattachent sur la souveraineté du pays, notamment sur son autonomie alimentaire ? Quelles sont les luttes portées par les mouvements sociaux et les mouvements féministes ? Quels modèles proposent-ils pour la revitalisation du pays ? Et surtout, comment soutenir la société civile dans ses efforts en vue d’une résolution de la crise ?

Alors que la réforme Dubé risque d’empirer les problèmes du système de santé et de services sociaux, l’IRIS met de l’avant six propositions pour réellement améliorer le fonctionnement du réseau. Pour instaurer une gestion démocratique à échelle humaine, nous proposons de créer 400 points de contact locaux directs entre le réseau et la population. Nous proposons aussi de hausser significativement les sommes consacrées à la prévention et à la première ligne, tout en doublant les investissements dans quatre domaines prioritaires, soit la santé mentale, la santé publique, les services à domicile et le secteur communautaire. Afin que le réseau puisse mieux répondre aux besoins de la population, nous proposons d’ajouter 100 000 personnes à ses effectifs. Enfin, ces pistes de solutions s’accompagnent de deux autres propositions pour renforcer le système : déprivatiser l’ensemble des services et démédicaliser le réseau en salariant les médecins et en réduisant leur rémunération.

The revival of social reproduction theory (SRT) represents one of the most dynamic and concrete terrains of debate in Marxism today, and struggles over social reproduction have been some of the most militant and effective in recent years. This series of three panels engages in these debates and explores the role of social reproduction in capitalist value production, the relationship between forms of exploitation and systems of oppression, and how social reproduction struggles have been expressed in current times. By considering capitalism as a social totality, sites of social reproduction and life-making will be discussed as important spaces for both working-class formation and potential struggle.

This third panel specifically addresses ways of theorizing the relationship between capitalism and the forms of oppression based on gender and race within Marxism and SRT. These discussions reveal the different interpretations of capitalism and Marx’s critique of political economy. The panellists will raise questions about the difficulties and the significance of theorizing gender and race as immanent forms of capitalism, i.e., in a “unitary theory”, as well as the political implications of a “unitary theory”, the theoretical problems of the debate between “unitary” and “dual” systems approaches regarding the analysis of gender oppression, and the relation between Marx’s critique of political economy and social difference, to explain capital’s need to exploit differentiated subjects.

The “unitary” and “dual” systems debate on the analysis of the relationship between capitalism and the oppression of “women” can be traced back to the critical debates in the 1970s and 1980s regarding the relationship between capitalism and patriarchy. The question of social totality has been a central point of tension in this debate, particularly in the critiques of the “dual systems theory” for not providing a “total social theory” (Young, 1997, p. 104). Social Reproduction Theory, with its contemporary variations, can be seen as an attempt to develop a “unitary” theory to analyze the relationship between gender oppression and capitalism through its underlying view of totality “as an organic whole” (Bhattacharya, 2017, p. 17). However, despite its possibilities, SRT can be criticized for not responding to one of the central critical questions of the “dual systems” approach, which is “why women are subordinate to men inside and outside the family and why it is not the other way around” (Hartmann, 1979, p. 8). In contemporary literature, several scholars responded to this question with their respective critical engagements with SRT by providing an underlying view of social totality in their analyses. In this presentation, with a particular focus on the question of social totality, I aim to show the limitations of thinking of the relationship between gender oppression and capitalism through the duality of “unitary” and “dual” systems and question the possibilities and limitations of the critical engagements with SRT in contemporary literature in terms of going beyond this duality.

A major issue in the study of capitalist social relations includes connecting the production of workers’ subjectivity, which comprises forms of consciousness, self-understandings, attitudes, and dispositions, with the capitalist mode of production itself. The question often arises as to whether capitalism produces an overall homogenization or differentiation of proletarian labor. Marxian analyses traditionally emphasize the similarities between members of the proletariat, while more contemporary theories of racial capitalism, social reproduction, and labor migration focus on how labor differentiation is crucial to understanding relations of exploitation. Rather than emphasizing one facet, I argue that social homogenization and differentiation of labor can both be accounted for using Marx’s critique of political economy. By employing Marx’s value-theory analysis and synthesizing the abstract and concrete characters of labor, I argue that capital both homogenizes and differentiates labor through the production of numerous subjectivities, i.e., productive subjects. This refers to the process by which the concrete content of embodied social differentiation (by race, gender, ethnicity, citizenship, occupations, skills and so on) develops in dialectical relation with abstract forms of capitalist social relations to produce various productive subjects for capital to exploit. Rather than discrimination being explained as the result of a separate process, I demonstrate how labor differentiation is intimately connected to the development of capital’s exploitation and the division of labor. Ultimately, this theorization will exhibit how the literature on social difference can be synthesized with Marx’s critique of political economy by recognizing homogenization and differentiation as inherently related forces.

Social reproduction, in its broadest sense, refers to the activities that reproduce labor power and, by extension, human existence itself. However, the term has come to be associated primarily with the work of women or feminized people, particularly those of color. Some argue that social reproduction extends beyond the wage relation, yet few would deny that paid nannies are performing social reproduction. Why, then, has SRT become central in discussions of capitalism, gender, and race? I contend that SRT allows scholars to address issues of gender and race without committing to a "unitary theory" where these categories are inseparable from capitalism. To do so would require exploring how gender and race are immanent to capitalism, a question Marxist anti-capitalists tend to avoid. At a minimum, this paper urges scholars to engage with the possibility that capitalism cannot exist without gender and race, just as it cannot exist without class. If they reject this idea, they must provide coherent arguments. Moreover, I suggest that developing a theory of capitalism that incorporates the immanence of gender and race brings us closer to understanding capitalism's true nature. It also offers insight into how to relate to Marx's work as we continue the struggle for revolution, liberation, and peace. While Marx's contributions are essential, they do not encompass the entire logic of capitalism, and he would not have claimed otherwise.

The formation of Marxist-Feminist theory was inspired by the Socialist-Feminists' attempt to ground the Women’s liberation movement during the 70s in an adequate theory and legitimize feminist struggles as a necessary part of the anti-capitalist struggle. They argued for an understanding of women’s oppression within the core structure of capitalism through the notion of social reproduction. In the 2010s, the Marxian form of Social Reproduction Theory (SRT) took up these theoretical developments in the context of a deeply gendered wave of class struggle, once again reflecting a demand for theoretical analyses that integrate explanations of different forms of oppression and the production of value in capitalism. Hence, this paper aims to reopen the debate on the political implications of Marxist-Feminist theory, specifically the Marxian form of SRT, arguing that understanding the necessary relationship between relations of oppression and capitalism needs to be seen as a purely analytical concern, not an immediate political one. SRT apprehends Marx’s category of totality to propose a unity between relations of exploitation and oppression. Even though political strategy cannot be directly derived from theoretical explanations developed at a high level of abstraction like the one SRT provides, fruitful political strategy cannot flourish without a conceptual framework able to grasp a more complete theoretical analysis of capitalist accumulation. By applying its conceptual framework to the concrete analysis of concrete historical reality, SRT’s theoretical tools can be translated to respond to capitalism's violent logic of exploitation, domination and oppression.

The nineteen-sixties counterculture and the New Left had only fleeting encounters, often speaking past one another. Unlike in authoritarian states, from Czechoslovakia to Brazil, the emblem of long hair, free love and the use of psychedelic drugs did not necessarily connote anti-systemic politics in the United States and other English-speaking countries. Indeed, some key thought leaders in the psychedelic milieu, notably the CIA asset Timothy Leary advised precisely against countercultural engagement with left politics. 

The exception to this pattern, however, was in the San Francisco Bay Area, home of Ken Kesey’s anarcho-psychedelic Merry Pranksters, the “Acid Tests”, famously decontextualized in the work of Tom Wolfe, and of course, the music of the Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane, both of whom, at the time, openly espoused revolutionary politics. Yet these musicians, notably Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead, a Black Panther supporter were quite deep, both financially and ideologically speaking.

What has not been yet revealed are the materiality of these connections, and their implications for both cultural and political practice. Engaging direct historical material, interviews and oral history, I will articulate an exception to the rule of “missed encounters” between popular culture and the New Left.  I will particularly engage The Grateful Dead’s aforementioned connection with the Black Panther Party and the broader Bay Area left, from the “Revolutionary Union” to the Weather Underground. This encounter between revolutionary politics and cultural practice has lessons for today’s own New Left. 

Dans cette communication, je souligne une des questions de cette année : comment changer le rapport de forces pour que les idées et les pratiques de gauche s’implantent durablement ? En me basant sur mes observations et mes entretiens avec les artistes de street art en Amérique latine, particulièrement mon terrain de recherche à Cuba, j’essaye à comprendre à travers l’art comment on peut engager le public dans une discussion dans l’espace public, et comment les artistes à travers l’occupation de cette espace incluent le public dans la discussion critique. J’insiste sur cet art, qui est éphémère, parfois interdit, mais une pratique en dehors des institutions officielles et des musées : un art dans la rue et pour la rue. C’est un art de la culture métissée ou une sous-culture. C’est un phénomène mondial, comme les tâches dans le paysage urbain, l’art qui voit dans la rue la source d’inspiration, il donne un autre monde à penser, une mondialisation effective. Les œuvres aux fresques monumentales, qui sont parfois réalisées avec un très petit budget, agissent un phénomène planétaire; elles courent dans tous les pays et donnent lieu aux interprétations différentes et parfois contradictoires. Dans nos sociétés policées et policières qui changent la rue à un espace sous surveillance, l’art urbain réintroduit de la différence, de la surprise, de la rencontre et de la possibilité à critiquer.

Ils sont tous reliés de façon systémique et financés par des investissements publics comme les actifs du Régime de rentes du Québec, gérés par la Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec (CDPQ).

Dans cet atelier participatif, les investissements problématiques de la Caisse de dépôt envers les droits humains des Palestinien.e.s serviront de cas de figure et de point de départ aux réflexions et discussions des participant.e.s. La première partie permettra d’offrir une base commune de connaissances sur la problématique soulevée. La seconde partie sera consacrée aux discussions en sous-groupes pour réfléchir ensemble à la question du désinvestissement et ce à quoi pourrait ressembler notre système de retraite dans une perspective sociale, décoloniale et post-croissance.

Est-ce possible de rêver à autre chose qu’une retraite financée par des violations des droits humains? Éthique, investissements et rendements sont-ils compatibles? Désinvestir des crimes de guerre pour investir dans une société des communs met-il nos retraites à risque? Sommes-nous prêts à faire cette alliance et à prendre ce pari collectif?

L’appel des organisations de la société civile palestinienne à un mouvement international de Boycott, Désinvestissement et Sanctions à l’encontre des politiques du gouvernement israélien a été entendu au Québec depuis quelques années, mais souvent avec des discontinuités majeures. Inspiré d’un mouvement similaire qui a contribué à renverser le régime d’apartheid en Afrique du Sud, ce mouvement est d’autant plus important que, depuis octobre 2023, le gouvernement israélien s’est lancé dans une guerre génocidaire à Gaza et a accentué son emprise coloniale sur les territoires palestiniens occupés de Cisjordanie et de Jérusalem-Est. Que peut la société civile internationale à un moment où les gouvernements occidentaux soutiennent le régime israélien et ses transgressions répétées du droit international. Le mouvement BDS a trouvé un écho encore insuffisant au Québec, comme en témoignent les campements de solidarité avec la Palestine. Comment mieux structurer ce mouvement et maximiser son impact?

Participants

Technologies, like AI, are largely driven by societally damaging imperatives, like capital accumulation, and reinforce systems of oppression and exploitation. Thus, when radical movements use technology to organize, it often does not align with their values and objectives, and can even reinforce existing power structures. In this workshop, we explore whether technologies and the spaces in which they are developed can be co-opted for radical movements.

We will reflect on positive roles for tech in radical theories of change, if such roles exist. We will ask: (1) what technologies like AI would look like if they were built for supporting radical movements; (2) how tech workers can use their positions of economic power to facilitate change. A secondary objective is to build connections between radically-minded members of the Montreal AI and activist communities.

The event will have two parts. 

• Talks by speakers from diverse backgrounds on lessons learned from other STEM fields, and successful examples of tech for radical movement building. 
• Roundtables with participants on how and if tech and AI could play a role in radical theories of change.

In October 2024, we facilitated a workshop at Mila on how responsible AI practices reproduce colonial patterns and plan to use our gained experience and expertise for this event.

Despite the growth of environmental and climate justice movements in recent years, the anti-climate movement looms large. The world’s largest economy and superpower will be led once again by a vocal climate denier, who stacked his cabinet with members of fossil capital during his first term. As the climate and cost of living crises worsen, some citizens are resistant to climate policy, and climate change threatens to become a central tenet of the “culture wars”. Conservative to far right actors are taking advantage of this to grow their movements. While shining a bright light on the anti-climate movement’s most potent strategies, this workshop will uncover weaknesses and discuss compelling openings for intervention from climate justice and progressive movements.

This workshop will provide an overview of fossil capital’s playbook in obstructing climate action in so-called Canada, and the simultaneous complementary growth of more grassroots far right organizing. It will provide an opportunity to discuss the combination of ideological and astro-turfed support for fossil fuels and against climate action. This workshop will also provide an opportunity for small-group and plenary discussion, to delve into the implications and visions for a robust, compelling response from climate justice movements.

La fondation de l’État haïtien en 1804 est le résultat de luttes anticoloniales et antiesclavagistes. Prenant naissance sur les ruines du système esclavagiste et colonial, se constituant grâce à la lutte des esclaves-marrons et des affranchis, son existence est inédite dans l’histoire de l’humanité. Or cet État dirigé uniquement par des affranchis, héros de la guerre de l’indépendance, reproduit le système des grandes plantations qui ont constitué la base économique du colonialisme, excluant de ce fait la grande masse des anciens esclaves (devenue la classe paysanne) du pouvoir politique et économique, ouvrant ainsi la voie au néocolonialisme.

La victoire de l’Armée Indigène contre l’armée napoléonienne française le 18 novembre 1803 à Vertières consacre l’Indépendance d’Haïti. La Révolution haïtienne désigne la remise en question la plus radicale de la modernité capitaliste coloniale esclavagiste et raciste. Elle est en effet perçue dans le contexte de la géopolitique coloniale mondiale comme une menace pour la stabilité de l’ordre colonial esclavagiste capitaliste mondial. La France a appliqué pendant deux décennies une politique de mise en quarantaine et d’isolement d’Haïti, car elle n’a jamais accepté la défaite de l’armée napoléonienne face à l’armée indigène le 18 novembre 1803. Elle a en effet imposé une indemnité coloniale pour réinstaurer sa domination coloniale et impériale sur Haïti qui équivaut à trois années de production haïtienne de 1825, soit 300 % du PIB, six fois les revenus officiels du gouvernement. Certains parlent de la double dette puisque Haïti devait emprunter dans les banques françaises pour payer. D’autres parlent plutôt de rançon, de tentative d’établissement d’un régime néocolonial, de renforcement du caractère semi-colonial du pays ou de prélude du néocolonialisme français. Je soutiens que la rançon/dette est un nouveau mécanisme financier d’instauration de la colonialité en Haïti. Ensuite, ce mécanisme est une arme contre-révolutionnaire et une entrave au déploiement et à l’application des idéaux de la Révolution haïtienne. Finalement, la mise en application de cette ordonnance coloniale de la France a impliqué l’exploitation de la classe paysanne par l’État oligarchique colonial en Haïti.

Partout sur la planète, des luttes citoyennes émergent ayant pour objectifs de contrer le système capitaliste et ses très graves conséquences (disparition du vivant, dérèglements climatiques, creusement des inégalités, etc.), ou dénoncer le néolibéralisme, le colonialisme, le patriarcat, le racisme et plus généralement les idées d’extrême-droite qui menacent de nombreuses démocraties et communautés. Dans ce contexte, alors que nous sommes aux prises avec une forme d’ébriété informationnelle très fortement liée aux réseaux sociaux et au capital algorithmique dopé à l’IA, rendant de plus en plus difficile la compréhension d’enjeux de société cruciaux, la communication engagée au service des communautés et de la planète est d’une importance cruciale. Par conséquent, il est vital de donner à la jeunesse les bases des bonnes pratiques communicationnelles dans une perspective anticapitaliste, décolonialiste, féministe, décroissantiste, à la défense des droits humains et du vivant. 

L'atelier vise à introduire l’auditoire aux techniques et stratégies communicationnelles, tant à l’écrit qu’en ayant recourt au format audio sous la forme de baladodiffusion (podcast), de plus en plus utilisée parmi les citoyennes et citoyens engagé.es. Comment trouver des sujets? Quels styles rédactionnels sont à privilégier? Comment trouver des médias sous licences libres afin d’agrémenter les écrits? Il s’agit, in fine, de donner l’envie d’écrire ou de créer des entrevues audio voire de lancer un balado dans une vision engagée, pour les communautés locales ou à l’échelle planétaire. Enfin, les publications de stagiaires du Programme de stages internationaux pour les jeunes d’Alternatives serviront d’outils pour faire le bilan des leçons apprises.

This session is a roundtable discussion reflecting on key themes raised in the book Eros and Alienation: Capitalism and the Making of Gendered Sexualities by Alan Sears. The panel will address issues of alienation, sexuality and gender formation in capitalist societies, highlighting themes of: queer work and divisions of labour; social reproduction and the organization of intimacy; ecology and embodiment; dehumanization and sexual violence; and anti-capitalist perspectives on queer and trans liberation.  The structure will be a roundtable, a facilitated conversational engagement among presenters and audience participants covering key themes raised by the book. Rather than traditional presentations, this session will invite panelists to engage with each other and audience participants around a sequence of key themes. The goal will be to workshop key issues in ecological, feminist, anti-racist and anti-colonial queer and trans marxism, highlighting the value of collective activist-oriented knowledge production in developing analytical tools and political practice.

Le combat qui oppose le climat au capital implique une tension structurelle inégale entre deux parties engagées. D’un côté, l’effondrement climatique, dont les effets ne sont plus à venir mais se sentent déjà — canicules, inondations, déplacements massifs à l’échelle mondiale, pertes irréversibles — impose l’urgence d’agir. De l’autre, un système économique fondé sur l’accumulation, l’extractivisme, la marchandisation du vivant et l’illusion d’une croissance finie sur une planète finie, continue d’être nourri par les plus grands détenteurs de ressources. Les rapports scientifiques le confirment : limiter la crise climatique suppose de rompre avec les logiques du capital, soit les mêmes logiques qui structurent les politiques dominantes.

Le dilemme est politique. Qui décide de ce qu’il faut changer? Qui porte le coût de l’adaptation? Quels récits parviennent à s’imposer? Tandis que les grandes entreprises reconfigurent leurs modèles pour favoriser leur acceptabilité sociale, les populations les plus vulnérables continuent de payer le prix de l’inaction globale.

Opposer climat et capital implique de reconnaître qu’il faut collectivement choisir entre perpétuer un modèle complice de la crise climatique ou construire les alternatives qui rompent avec le schéma imposé. Ces alternatives se construisent déjà, dans les luttes paysannes, les résistances autochtones, les appels à la décroissance, les formes de réappropriation collective des ressources et d’économie circulaire, et dans les mouvements de jeunesse.

The struggle opposing climate and capital implies an unequal structural tension between the two parties. On the one hand, climate collapse, whose effects are no longer upcoming but rather felt every day – heat waves, floods, displacement at a massive scale, irreversible losses – renders explicit the urgency of climate action. On the other hand, an economic system founded on accumulation, extractivism, commodification, and the illusion of infinite growth on a finite planet continues to be fueled by those who control natural resources. Scientific reports confirm that limiting the climate crisis entails breaking with the logic of capital—the same logic that structures contemporary politics.

The question is political. Who decides what needs to change? Who bears the cost of adaptation? Which narratives become accepted? While large corporations reconfigure their images to boost their social acceptability, the world’s most vulnerable populations continue to pay the price of inaction.

Opposing climate and capital implies recognizing that we must collectively choose between perpetuating an economic model complicit in the climate crisis or building alternatives that break with imposed models. These alternatives are already under construction, through peasant struggles, Indigenous resistance, calls for degrowth, forms of collective reappropriation of resources, circular economies, and youth movements.

Dr. William K. Carroll will present and discuss his new book "Refusing Ecocide From Fossil Capitalism to a Liveable World'' with three discussants: Thomas Chiasson-Lebel (UOF), Chris Hurl (Concordia), and Annabelle Rivard (UdeM).

Refusing Ecocide: From Fossil Capitalism to a Liveable World provides a critical analysis of the central role of fossil capitalism in causing climate change and argues that only alternatives based upon democratic eco-socialism can prevent the deepening of the climate crisis. Employing three core concepts within historical materialism – capitalist accumulation, imperialism and hegemony – it locates the existential threat of our changing climate in the drive for increasing profit and growth, the domination of advanced capitalist states that strip resources and exploit cheap labour, and the consent to the capitalist way of life in the global North. With attention to the ways in which, powered by fossil fuels, capital has subjected the world to its predatory logic, this book charts this history and surveys the damage from the Industrial Revolution to today’s deep civilizational crisis, arguing that the market-based and purely technological solutions of ‘climate capitalism’ are too little, too late. A call for a multifaceted and multi-scalar shift away from capitalist accumulation, imperialism and class hegemony and instead towards democratic eco-socialism, it will appeal to scholars across the social sciences with interests in political and social theory, the environment and sustainability.

In examination of the availability and quality of health/social services for older/disabled adults, scholars, journalists, and politicians have agreed: care is in crisis. Personal support workers experience astonishingly high rates of violence and workplace injury, are poorly compensated, and work within a broader political and economic context that devalues care as a gendered and often racialized form of labour. Yet, qualitative research reveals that despite reporting that the conditions in which they work cause them great distress, many PSWs find care work deeply fulfilling, and make efforts to resist institutional and state forces that undermine the high-quality care they wish to provide. 

Through collective discussion, grounded in both academic and lived experience, we suggest that care under capitalism can, and even should, be conceptualized as resistance. In the context of increasing alienation between workers and their labour, direct care provision remains a deeply embodied form of work, the impacts of which are unmistakable. The demand for direct care provision has increased significantly with no sign of stopping. As such, there are a vast number of possibilities to consider as we resist structural violence inherent in our healthcare system, and reimagine relationally focused futures for care workers, care recipients, and their families. Our primary focus is to discuss with participants how care workers can redefine their working conditions in the face of neoliberal austerity and capitalist oppression, and how to reclaim care work as a form of anti-capitalist resistance.

What can we imagine with the body? Stemming from this question, we propose a two-hour, playfully structured activity designed to stimulate utopian imagination. Using provocative questions, imaginative exercises, embodied representation, and creative production, this activity fosters a collective space for epistemological experimentation. In tune with proponents' research on utopia, this concept acts here as a creative force, as lines of flight from dogma, and a means to envision alternative social realities. Moving beyond conventional knowledge methods, we explore art, play, the body, affection, spontaneity, subjectivity, and other marginalized knowledge forms. The activity is suitable for 10-30 participants of any age, and requires minimal materials (blindfolds with questions attached, paper, and pens). A former version of this activity was conducted by one of the proponents in the “Utopian Topics” extension course at the Federal University of Santa Catarina, Brazil (2018).

To prepare, facilitators create blindfolds with thought-provoking questions on black fabric, which participants wear during the exercise. In the first stage, participants stand in a circle, facing outward with blindfolds on, as the facilitator delivers a monologue on societal restriction and conformity, encouraging physical expressions of feelings such as pressure, comfort, alienation, revolt, etc.

Next, participants imagine a world without limits, re-envisioning life, relationships, and nature through guided reflection. Each participant then removes another’s blindfold and reads the attached question aloud. They record their visions on paper through writing, drawing, or embodied expression. Finally, the group gathers to share, weaving personal visions into a collective utopian tapestry.

Le militantisme en Afrique, en lien avec l'extractivisme, est un phénomène complexe qui émerge dans un contexte marqué par l'exploitation des ressources naturelles. Dans cette région, des ressources telles que l'or, le pétrole, et les minéraux sont souvent extraites au détriment des communautés locales et de l'environnement. Par ailleurs, en plus de la destruction de l’environnement, l’extractivisme se déploie par une politique de la violence et la destruction des écosystèmes sociaux, politiques et économiques des communautés, bien souvent marginalisées et en situation de vulnérabilité, afin d’enrichir les grands centres, les métropoles et les nations surindustrialisées. 

Ce phénomène a donné naissance à de nombreux mouvements sociaux et collectifs qui revendiquent des droits et cherchent à défendre leurs terres. Le militantisme lié à l'extractivisme est donc non seulement une lutte pour les droits des communautés, mais également un combat pour un avenir durable et équitable, où les ressources naturelles bénéficient à tous et non à une minorité. 

Ce webinaire aura donc pour vocation de mettre en lumière l’importance de la solidarité sur la question du militantisme lié à l’extractivisme en Afrique. Par l’entremise d’organisations locales et de militant.e.s, nous ferons un portrait de différentes expériences et réalités, tout en parlant des enjeux et des pistes d'actions concrètes qui peuvent être mises en place pour contrer ce phénomène.

De 1971 à 1975, la revue Mobilisation a joué un rôle structurant pour la gauche montréalaise, alors en pleine recomposition. Après avoir fait l’analyse selon laquelle l’action militante de la fin des années 1960 avait été trop dispersée et éclatée, des militant·e·s ont jugé qu’il fallait à la fois se doter d’organisations plus solides et créer des liens plus forts avec les membres de la classe ouvrière. Les militant·e·s du groupe Mobilisation et d’autres groupes alliés ont donc décider de s’implanter en milieu de travail – usines et hôpitaux – pour rejoindre les travailleurs et les travailleuses et participer à leurs luttes. La revue Mobilisation a alors publié des réflexions stratégiques sur ce travail de liaison, en combinant la description détaillée des milieux de travail, l’analyse de l’inscription de ces milieux dans le système capitaliste et le bilan critique des actions posées dans ce milieu. Au fil des expériences d’implantation, les militant·e·s de Mobilisation ont élaboré une approche originale orientée vers la création de comités de travailleurs, qui ont contribué à démocratiser et à radicaliser les luttes ouvrières en partant de revendications concrètes.

Cette discussion s’appuiera sur le recueil de textes de la revue Mobilisation publié cette année par M Éditeur. Les présentateurs seront André Vincent, membre fondateur de Mobilisation et ancien implanté chez Postes Canada, et Guillaume Tremblay-Boily, directeur du recueil et auteur d’une thèse sur l’implantation marxiste-léniniste en milieu de travail. La discussion sera animée par Camille Legault-Thuot, éditrice chez M Éditeur.

Cam W will present his essay, “Unity and Division”, which explores how to build unity within organizations based on the writer’s own experiences in labor unions, tenant unions, and cadre organizations. In “Postmodernity Against Postmodernism,” Andrew McWhinney stages a critique of the use of the term “postmodernism” by Marxists as an insult against supposedly non-class-oriented activist groups and movements. In “Thinking Reeds,” T. M. discusses how common conceptions of the relationships between individuals, left-wing groups, and structural social tendencies lead to practical problems for communist organization. In “Going Beyond: The Cultures of Communist Education,” Sean Alderson compiles an analysis of several communist educational programs in order to highlight common flaws, specifically a surplus of sectarianism and a shortage of self-criticism. Lastly, Marine Tucker will present “The Struggle for the Soul”, which argues for the development of a culture of critique within communist organization.

In “Going Beyond: The Cultures of Communist Education,” Sean Alderson compiles an analysis of several communist educational programs in order to highlight common flaws, specifically a surplus of sectarianism and a shortage of self-criticism. Alderson makes use of Paolo Freire’s Pedagogy of the Oppressed to emphasize the severe consequences of these flaws, consequences that worsen the communist movement as a whole through questionable analyses, outdated strategies, and unhelpful hostilities. In highlighting these flaws and their consequences, Alderson aims to encourage greater collaboration on education across tendencies in the effort to give newcomers a more complete understanding. More importantly, he aims to promote intense criticism of ourselves, our organizations, our assumptions, and our heroes, a revival of the underutilized “ruthless criticism of all that exists”. 

In “Postmodernity Against Postmodernism,” Andrew McWhinney stages a critique of the use of the term “postmodernism” by Marxists as an insult against supposedly non-class-oriented activist groups and movements. Through an immanent critique of the concept and its use in Marxist organizational discourse, guided by Fredric Jameson’s work on postmodernism, McWhinney argues that this term actually obfuscates what said Marxists are trying to critique: namely, liberalism in the moment of postmodernity. Such obfuscation, he says, not only clouds effective analysis and action by nominally Marxist/socialist/communist organizations by distracting them from the real stakes of culture in our contemporary moment, but also enables chauvinism and maintains an unconscious reproduction of liberal modes of thinking within them.  Further elaborating on what liberalism under postmodernity looks like, McWhinney ultimately argues that good communists need to take postmodernity and its effects seriously if they ever hope to succeed in changing the world. 

In “Thinking Reeds,” T. M. discusses how common conceptions of the relationships between individuals, left-wing groups, and structural social tendencies lead to practical problems for communist organization. T. M. critiques both approaches which claim that left-wing groups ought to conform to the immediate demands of the social totality (to the extent that the group internalizes the totality’s oppressive aspects) as well as approaches which see left-wing groups as potentially radically independent from the totality (which creates damaging organizational cultures and ineffectively represses necessary intrusions of “outside” culture). T. M. concludes by outlining steps towards organizational reflections and practices that would engage frankly and openly with a given group’s capacities, limitations, and environment.

In, "Unity and Division," Cam W explores how to build unity within organizations based on the writer’s own experiences in labor unions, tenant unions, and cadre organizations. Cam starts out from the premise that division is the rule in capitalist society. This is because in societies with oppressive or exploitative social relations, individuals in the dominated classes are often divided from each other. In order to become a viable political force, these individuals must unite together in order to fight those in power. Yet building this unity is incredibly difficult. After all, the history of communism is defined by division in the form of splits, conflicts, and political defeats resulting in frequent periods of disorganization. Even organizations that lasted for decades, like the Communist parties of Western Europe and the United States, were marked by splits, expulsions, and frequent realignment. Unity is fragile and sensitive, and maintaining it is a colossal challenge. 

Cam explores obstacles to unity, such as state repression, individualist ideologies, and burnout. Cam concludes the essay by advancing an approach to cultivating unity within organizations, which entails clearly defined roles for members, a clear strategy, tactical flexibility, and developing collective buy in. The main priority of organization is how to effectively harness and combine the skills and capacity of every member so that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts—to ensure that everyone is pulling in the same direction.

L’accélération de la crise climatique et le dépassement des limites planétaires comptent parmi les menaces les plus importantes aux conditions de travail, souvent dans un horizon rapproché. Laisser aux patrons la responsabilité de l’adaptation aux crises garantit que les travailleur-ses en feront les frais.

Travailleuses et travailleurs pour la justice climatique (TJC) organise des assemblées de travailleurs et de travailleuses permettant aux membres d’un syndicat de réfléchir à ces enjeux, de se les approprier, de se positionner et de développer des stratégies de mobilisation. Dans la dernière année, TJC a organisé des journées de réflexion avec les travailleur-ses d’Unifor, section locale 62 (travailleur-ses de Bombardier) et avec des travailleur-ses des syndicats du transport. Une journée aura lieu bientôt avec les travailleur-ses du syndicat de la scierie Louisiana-Pacific. Dans la prochaine année, TJC compte déployer ces assemblées dans plusieurs syndicats de l’aéronautique et de la foresterie.

TJC est aussi actif en éducation, où une grande réflexion nationale se prépare. Les États généraux de l’éducation pour la transition écologique et sociale sont un premier exemple des grandes réflexions nationales que nous comptons déployer dans chacun des secteurs de l’économie. 

Nous proposons d’animer un panel regroupant à la fois des militant-es de TJC et des travailleur-ses qui ont participé à tous les événements mentionnés plus haut, pour partager leur expérience et réfléchir à ces questions : comment accompagner efficacement les travailleuses et travailleurs syndiqué.es dans leur mobilisation pour la justice climatique? Comment celleux-ci peuvent pleinement s’approprier ces enjeux?

Pour chaque dollar qui dort dans nos comptes d’épargne, dix dollars sont empruntés par la banque ou la caisse auprès de la banque centrale et investis en notre nom pour financer des guerres et des tragédies écologiques. Les promoteurs immobiliers que nous dénonçons dans nos villes les construisent à leur image avec l’argent issu de nos propres comptes.

L’argent en banque (ou dans sa jumelle, la caisse populaire) ne dort jamais — il est toujours investi, avec ou sans notre consentement, avec ou sans notre conscience. Il nous faut de vraies alternatives. Nous devons pouvoir déplacer notre argent, le mettre en commun, et bâtir des projets économiques qui le maintiennent dans nos communautés.

Chez Brique par brique, nous construisons des logements sociaux hors marché pour des locataires à faible revenu, souvent discriminés sur le marché locatif montréalais. Nous soutenons les résident·es et les organisateur·rices communautaires dans notre centre communautaire. Et grâce à nos investisseur·es en obligations communautaires, nous décommodifions des espaces de manière permanente. Nous court-circuitons les banques et surpassons les promoteurs, un immeuble à la fois.

Si nous voulons redonner vie à une solidarité non capitaliste, il faut faire avec ce que nous avons. Isolées, nos communautés sont vulnérables. Mais en mettant notre argent en commun, nous avons le pouvoir de bâtir un nouveau modèle de développement économique centré sur les personnes marginalisées à faible revenu.

Depuis vingt-cinq ans l’écosocialisme a connu un développement remarquable. D’un courant théorique peu connu et sans grande influence politique, il est devenu le cœur battant de la proposition socialiste en cette troisième décennie du 21è siècle. Le lien qu’il propose entre crise écologique et accumulation capitaliste est accepté par de grand pans du mouvement environnemental; sa critique du cul de sac que constitue le capitalisme vert et l’illusion d’une transition qui ne serait pas en rupture avec le système actuel est prise au sérieux par beaucoup de militants-es progressistes; des intellectuel-lles de grande qualité comme John Bellamy Foster, Nancy Fraser, ou Andreas Malm ont contribué à lui donner une fondation théorique solide et féconde. 

Mais la proposition écosocialiste s’avère encore insuffisante au niveau de la stratégie : comment passer de la situation de polycrise actuelle à un changement fondamental ? Comment développer un mouvement de masse pour la justice climatique et sociale alors que l’extrême-droite est en ascension ? Comment rallier les classes ouvrières et laborieuses à la perspective écosocialiste ? Quel rôle pour un syndicalisme écologique et militant dans un tel combat ? Quelles seraient les forces sociales alliées? 

Pour engager les débats sur ces questions nous proposons deux ateliers. Le premier, intitulé (Re)Penser l’écosocialisme-quelques questions stratégiques, porterait sur les alliances de classes et la question de la décroissance. Le deuxième, intitulé (Re)Penser l’écosocialisme-quelques questions tactiques, porterait sur l’écosyndicalisme et les rapports avec le mouvement environnemental.

Liberal rule has been destabilized by the political and economic volatility associated with the capitalist crisis beginning in 2008. The strain on liberal governance only worsened with the onset of the COVID pandemic in early 2020. Of course, these proximate catalysts of instability built on decades of intractable neoliberal commitment to market discipline and austerity by states around the world, the expansive and unremitting War on Terror carried out by the United States and its allies, the deepening manifestations of ecological erosion, the initiation of new major wars and genocides, and the escalation of inter-imperialist rivalry, above all between the United States and China. 

To the extent there is fascist resurgence today, it is still in most places a relatively nascent phenomenon, experiencing considerable flux. It remains a relatively narrow element within a broader authoritarian tendency of contemporary capitalist rule. The most salient threat to the liberal democratic order at present is not fascism per se, but a more pervasive and eclectic mélange of anti-democratic phenomena and inclinations. There is an authoritarian disposition at the core of capitalism, a tendency integral to its very nature as a system of exploitation, oppression, and alienation. Liberalism, military authoritarianism, and fascism are different political forms that this underlying disposition has assumed in specific historical circumstances. Fascism is a restricted and extreme component of this wider phenomenon. It contains features that are singular to it, but others that overlap with the universal authoritarian disposition of all capitalist rule.

Centered around Adam Turl’s book, Gothic Capitalism: Art Evicted from Heaven and Earth (Revol Press, 2025), this panel from Locust Review examines the loss of contemporary art’s reasons for being in an attenuating neoliberalism. Turl argues that art’s historic “spiritual” and “social” roles have been called into question by financialization, the abandonment of the modern ideal of “art for art’s sake,” and a capitalist realist collapse of “utopian” dreaming. Moreover, art faces a crisis of substitutability with AI and digital media. Turl argues for a rapprochement with the Marxist historical working-class subject to salvage art’s social and spiritual roles. Fellow Locust editor Alexander Billet will examine a similar crisis facing popular music, including a crisis of financialization that has diffused music everywhere and nowhere. Billet notes, for example, how Spotify and AI has changed our relationship with recorded sound. As gentrification has encroached on urban counter-cultural space, music is haunted by the specter of what it could be and what it has been: a creative-aesthetic endeavor that reimagines our relationship with time, apart from capital’s domination over it. Locust member Tish Turl will discuss creating “counter-imaginaries” opposed to capitalist realism in their ongoing prosimetrum, The Stink Ape Resurrection Primer (Locust Review). They will share specific examples informed by the idea of gothic capitalism and what they call “class revenge fanfiction.” Holly Lewis will act as a panel discussant.

Art’s historic “spiritual” and “social” roles have been called into question by art world financialization, the bourgeoisie’s abandonment of the modern ideal of “art for art’s sake,” and a capitalist realist collapse of “utopian” dreaming. Moreover, art faces a crisis of substitutability in relation to digital media and generative AI, confounding a crisis of meaning. Turl argues that art must seek a rapprochement with the Marxist historical subject -- the working-class and oppressed -- in the art as well as the "in real life" relationship of art to the class  -- to salvage the social and spiritual roles of art. 

This paper will apply the frameworks of Adam Turl’s Gothic Capitalism to the current state of popular music. Like visual art, music fulfills a psychological, emotional, and spiritual need. Like art, music faces a profound crisis brought on by financialization that has diffused it everywhere and nowhere (look, for example, at the impact Spotify and AI have had on our relationship with recorded sound). Likewise, the gentrification and policing of cities has deprived space for counter cultural scenes — crucial to the development of pop music, from London’s punks to the Haight Ashbury — to thrive. Like art, music is haunted by the spectre of what it could be and what it has been: a creative-aesthetic endeavor that reimagines our relationship with time, apart from capital’s domination over it.

This presentation will discuss creating “counter-imaginaries” opposed to capitalist realism in Tish Turl’s ongoing prosimetrum, The Stink Ape Resurrection Primer (Locust Review), and provide examples informed by gothic capitalism. The concept of “class-revenge fan-fiction,” adapted from fan-fiction more generally, aims to represent realities and working-class lives that are familiar but also aspire, formally and narratively, to escape the limits of capitalist realism.

Time and time again we hear from organizers that their collectives dissolved because of conflict or members had to leave because of interpersonal disputes or that groups struggle to build coalitions because of personal disagreements–most groups on the left lack the skills, structures, and/or drive to facilitate moving through conflict. Hyperindividualism and competition are so deeply rooted. In thinking about building new worlds in the shell of the old, it is the internal transformative work or cooperative culture skill building situated in the broader sphere of anti-capitalist systems change that will allow us to better prefigure worlds grounded in community and sustain this liberatory work.

This workshop, facilitated by comrades who connected through autonomous political education organizing, will highlight critical cooperative skills, including love-based facilitation, contracting consent through cooperative processes, and speaking/listening authentically to foster stronger communication and conflict resolution skills. Inspired by our experiences living and working collectively, facilitating popular education workshops around understanding capitalism, and drawing from the rich legacy of Zapatismo, we will emphasize the importance of nurturing these skills, building from participant experiences to deepen understanding before putting into praxis these skills through group activities and self-reflection questions. 

By the end of this workshop, collaborators will be better equipped to facilitate meetings rooted in accessibility and collective consciousness, learn tools to contract consent, and broaden their authentic communication toolkits as listeners and speakers. We will all emerge with stronger ideas for making our meetings, discussion processes, and conflict resolution tactics spaces of political pleasure.

Pour la conférence La Grande Transition, Alliance Ouvrière propose une discussion sur son travail de mobilisation. Voici une historique et un compte-rendu de ses activités. 

Alliance Ouvrière est une organisation formée depuis la fin de la pandémie par des travailleurs québécois pour mettre pression sur la direction de leurs syndicats et sur le gouvernement québécois pour obtenir des meilleures conditions de travail. AO compte sur des travailleurs syndiqués dans le secteur public, tels que les hôpitaux, ainsi que des travailleurs non-syndiqués chez les camionneurs, les agences de travail temporaire, etc. Les membres sont autant québécois de souche qu’immigrants. AO est basée à Montréal, et à la ville de Québec. 

Lors des grèves du Front Commun, AO a tenu des réunions pour offrir aux grévistes un lieu de rassemblement pour discuter des négociations syndicales. Actuellement, AO participe à la campagne de syndicalisation d’Amazon avec la CSN et mobilise les travailleurs dans le domaine de la construction contre la loi 16. Pour ce faire, AO organise des réunions mensuelles et des actions solidaires qui attirent entre 30-60 personnes. AO s’est dotée d’un comité exécutif choisi par les membres. Elle organise des activités et des conférences solidaires, tel que l’atelier « Bâtir la gauche révolutionnaire en milieu de travail », qui aura lieu le 9 novembre à Québec. Une conférence d’une journée est planifiée pour décembre à Montréal. AO contribue au journal L'ÉTOILE DU NORD.

Sam Grant will lead us in an opening activity to gather our attention and ground us.

Jen Gobby will introduce herself as session moderator and invite the other speakers to introduce themselves.

After the opening, Molly Murphy (Resistance Resilience Network), Sam Grant (Rainbow Research) and Jen Gobby & Niloofar Golkar (Research for the Front Lines) will each speak for 5-7 minutes, in turn, about how they engage with research as a form of care in service to transformative, anti-capitalist, decolonial, feminist goals. 

After this initial go around, the speakers will be invited to ask each other prompting questions and to ask questions to the session participants. This part of the session is designed to generate new ideas, insights and knowledge about the central questions of our session: How can we hospice research-as-imperial-practice? And how can we cultivate research-as-liberatory-practice?

From this discussion we will harvest a list of ideas and actions for transforming what research is and who it is for. As a closing activity, we will encourage folks to write one key intention or insight emerging from the session to take with them as they go.

Avant son départ de Gaza, le Dr Ahmad Abu Shaban a assisté à la destruction de l’infrastructure de son université et a vécu la douleur de ses étudiant·es et de ses collègues assassiné·es par les bombes et l’artillerie de l’armée israélienne. 

Pendant des décennies, la population réfugiée de Gaza avait réussi à mettre en place un système éducatif dynamique composé d’une dizaine d’universités, de collèges, d’écoles primaires et secondaires et d’établissements préscolaires dans la plus grande prison à ciel ouvert de la planète. Si plusieurs rapports ont déjà fait état des dommages directs causés par l’armée israélienne sur le système d’éducation à Gaza et sur le droit à l’éducation — des écoles en ruine, des milliers d’enfants tué·es et blessé·es et des centaines d’enseignant·es assassiné·es — il est encore trop tôt pour en mesurer les effets à plus long terme. Et il est surtout difficile d’imaginer l’ampleur de la destruction.

En plus d’informer sur le scholasticide qui a toujours cours dans l’enclave palestinienne, le témoignage de première main d’un professeur de Gaza, Ahmad Abu Shaban, sera l’occasion de nouer des solidarités avec des éducatrices et des éducateurs, des étudiant·es et des intellectuel·les palestinien·nes et de favoriser un rapprochement entre la lutte palestinienne et les mouvements pour le droit à l’éducation et pour la protection de la liberté académique au Québec et au Canada. La conférence servira aussi d’espace pour imaginer des actions collectives dans les universités et les cégeps, y compris des mesures de boycottage, des désinvestissements et des sanctions, visant à mettre fin à l’impunité des groupes complices au scholasticide à Gaza.

Dans un deuxième temps, Benoît Lacoursière, qui préside la plus grande fédération syndicale en enseignement supérieur au Québec, abordera la solidarité entre le mouvement syndical du Québec et la lutte pour la libération de la Palestine. Depuis plusieurs années, la Fédération nationale des enseignantes et des enseignants du Québec (FNEEQ-CSN) soutient des organisations palestiniennes et des syndicats qui travaillent dans le secteur de l’éducation en Palestine. En 2010, la fédération a pris part au Forum mondial de l’éducation qui s’est tenu en Palestine en 2010 et a facilité la participation de plus d’une cinquantaine d’enseignant·es de cégeps du Québec.

We invite you to come and listen to a teacher from Gaza, Dr. Ahmad Abu Shaban. Ahmad has witnessed, through his own eyes, the destruction of the infrastructure of his university, experienced the pain of his students and colleagues being murdered by the bombs and artillery of Israeli army.

You will learn how a vibrant education system with dozens of universities, schools and colleges, daycare centres were built by the refugee population of Gaza, the largest open-air prison on Earth.

It should not surprise you, but many people around the world are unaware of the extent of scholasticide in Gaza. With this gathering we are making an effort to raise awareness and foster global solidarity with Palestinian educators, students, and intellectuals. Your participation can also facilitate to connect the struggle in Gaza to movements for educational justice and the protection of academic freedom here in Quebec/Canada.

Numerous articles, and reports have been published on the damages caused by the Israeli military. All educational infrastructure is either destroyed or in need of major repairs, thousands of children have been killed and many more injured, hundreds of teachers have been murdered. Nobody really knows the real extent of destruction and despair caused by Israel in Gaza.

We encourage you to build university and college-based actions here, including boycotts, divestments and sanctions against entities complicit in scholasticide in Gaza.

We will also hear from the President of the largest higher education teachers’ federation in Quebec, Benoît Lacoursière talk to us about the solidarity of the trade union movement with the Palestinian struggle for national liberation. FNEEQ-CSN has been a long time supporter of Palestinian organizations and trade unions working in the education sector in Palestine. It supported the World Education Forum held in Palestine in 2010 to which it had facilitated the participation of over 50 college teachers from Quebec.

The encampment at McGill University was initiated on April 27, 2025 by McGill and Concordia students, with the support of faculty, staff and members of the community.  It was the first and longest lasting camp in Canada, until it was dismantled by the university on July 10th. Over a 75-day period, the encampment served as a site of protest, mobilization, popular education and alliance, and community building. Participants in the workshop will situate the importance of the encampment in the longer history of the struggle against Israeli colonialism, some of the wins and the challenges that encampments presented, and the lessons learned in the use of spaces as political sites.

Un an et demi après le 7 octobre 2023, ce qui se déroule aujourd’hui en Palestine dépasse les logiques de guerre : c’est une entreprise de destruction génocidaire menée à grande échelle, une réalité méthodiquement organisée, médiatiquement atténuée, et politiquement soutenue. La Palestine aujourd’hui, c’est l’histoire d’une complicité internationale, d’un système mondial qui hiérarchise les vies. C’est la mise en lumière de la continuation de pratiques coloniales au XXIe siècle, cachées sous la sécurité et la lutte contre le terrorisme. Les populations civiles et les infrastructures clés sont exposées quotidiennement à des attaques systémiques aux conséquences humanitaires et sociales catastrophiques.

Pourtant, au cœur de cet effacement planifié d’un territoire, d’une mémoire et d’un futur, la résistance persiste. Cette résistance palestinienne collective et vitale prend diverses formes souvent invisibilisées: préservation et renforcement des liens communautaires, transmission culturelle et linguistique, engagement militant ou encore production intellectuelle. Hors de Palestine, des milliers de voix s’élèvent également et s’organisent pour dénoncer les crimes en cours, contester l’impunité, et porter des revendications claires de justice et de liberté. Cette solidarité globale participe d’une résistance transnationale qui remet en cause les récits dominants et crée des ponts entre luttes.

Comprendre le génocide en Palestine aujourd’hui, c’est donc interroger les rapports de force mondiaux, les logiques coloniales contemporaines, et les possibilités de résistance dans un monde marqué par l’impunité. C’est aussi se questionner sur les rôles et responsabilités des chercheur.e.s, juristes, journalistes, artistes et citoyen.ne.s dans la construction de la justice en Palestine.

A year and a half after October 7th, 2023, the situation in Palestine today surpasses the logic of war: it is an endeavour of genocidal destruction, methodically organized, minimized by the media, and supported by the political class. Palestine today is a story of international complicity and of a global system that values some lives more than others. It is a story of the exposure and continuation of colonial practices in the 21st century, hidden under the veil of safety and counter-terrorism. Civilian populations and key infrastructures are subject to daily, systematic attacks whose humanitarian and social consequences are catastrophic.

And yet, at the heart of this planned erasure of a territory, of its past and its future, resistance persists. This collective and vital Palestinian resistance takes many forms, be it the reinforcing community ties, cultural linguistic transmission, militancy, or intellectual production. Outside Palestine, thousands of people have raised their voices and organized to condemn crimes against humanity, contest the impunity with which they are being perpetrated, and put forward clear demands for justice and freedom. This global solidarity is part of a network of transnational resistance that calls dominant narratives into question and bridges the gaps between various struggles.

Understanding the genocide in Palestine today requires us to interrogate global power structures, contemporary colonial logic, and the possibilities of resistance in a world shaped by impunity. It also requires us to examine the roles and responsibilities of researchers, lawyers, journalists, artists and citizens in the construction of justice in Palestine.

Le système libéral fait face à une crise d’hégémonie qui affecte aussi bien l’économie que la politique et la sphère culturelle et médiatique: l’accroissement des inégalités et des violences amène toujours plus de gens à rejeter ce système, parfois au profit des solutions autoritaires et de l’extrême droite. Les médias, qui forment une institution libérale par excellence, subissent de plein fouet les conséquences de ce rejet.

Face à cette situation, les médias dominants tendent à se braquer, tentant de préserver à tout prix leurs modes de fonctionnement plutôt qu’à les réinventer, ce qui compromet tant leur survie que leur pertinence.

Comment repenser les médias au-delà du modèle libéral traditionnel? Comment définir le rôle des médias et du journalisme, notamment en évitant les écueils d’une fausse neutralité profitant aux classes dominantes, ainsi qu’en retissant des liens avec les communautés? Quelles solutions pour financer le travail des médias alors que les modes de financements passés sont rendus caducs, notamment par la reconfiguration de l’économie autour des GAFAM? Comment faire face à l’extrême droite, à ses mensonges et ses attaques envers les contre-pouvoirs, tant au sein de l’État que de l’écosystème médiatique?

Ce panel proposera des pistes de réponses concrètes à ces questions en mettant de l’avant les expériences des nouveaux médias indépendants canadiens qui redéfinissent déjà l’avenir de ce secteur en pleine transformation.

Opinions about environmentalism on the Left are often divided. On the one hand, environmentalism has long been accused of being elitist and exclusive, but on the other, there is an amazing well of untapped power in our communities to build an ecology of solidarity, breaking through class barriers, and strengthening left forces for internationalist solidarity against the war on the planet. In this double book launch, authors Eleanor Finley (Practicing Social Ecology, Pluto Press, February 2025) and Vijay Kolinjivadi and Aaron Vansintjan (The Sustainability Class, The New Press, December 2024) will present their books, which discuss these themes from different angles. In The Sustainability Class, Kolinjivadi and Vansintjan take well-meaning liberal progressive readers through the traps of elite environmentalism from Los Angeles to Saudi Arabia, showing how any environmentalism based on exclusion makes things worse—like trying to douse a fire with flamethrowers. They look at movements that offer an alternative to working-class organizing for material interests, imagination, solidarity, and building the power to say no and to say yes. In Practicing Social Ecology, Finley takes readers through her experience of democratic ecology movements from the revolution in Rojava to Barcelona's municipalist movement and beyond, showing how activists use ecological thinking to develop study groups, democratic assemblies, and confederations.

En février et en mars 2023 j'ai séjourné au Chiapas, un État du sud-est mexicain marqué par les expériences de luttes et d'autonomie du mouvement et des communautés zapatistes. J'ai eu la chance de réaliser un projet d'accompagnement avec les Bricos (Brigades civiles d'observation des droits humains, ) du centre des droits humains Frayba, plus précisément avec la communauté autonome des Abejas d'Acteal pendant deux semaines. Un des buts importants du projet est de partager l'expérience et informer sur la situation et la vie des communautés auprès des gens ici en soulevant les intérêts canadiens présents. 

Depuis mon retour, j'ai donc contribué par un article de la revue Caminando (vol. 37 no.2) du Comité pour les droits humains en Amérique latine (CDHAL) et j'ai partagé cette expérience à quatre reprises dans ma ville à Sherbrooke ainsi qu'à Chicoutimi en juin 2023 et à Rimouski en novembre 2024. Le Bâtiment 7 est un édifice de 9 200 m2 situé sur les terrains du Canadien National à Pointe-Saint-Charles qui, après 9 ans de lutte, a été cédé en 2012 par un propriétaire capitaliste à un OSBL. Depuis 2018, diverses sections du bâtiment, du terrain et des moyens de production sont mises en commun par différentes communautés, agencées au sein d’une grande communauté du commun gérant l’ensemble. Je commencerai par un survol des différents communs qui sont en jeu dans et autour du Bâtiment 7. Par souci de temps, je n'entrerai pas dans l'analyse de chacun d'entre eux. Je me concentrerai plutôt sur les spécificités de la communauté des communs dans son ensemble, en discutant de l'accès aux communs avec une attention particulière à la question de la diversité. J'utilise la notion de pouvoir social pour mieux comprendre les dynamiques qui agissent sur la pleine participation de certaines personnes à la communauté des communs. Dans une optique matérialiste intersectionnelle, je me concentre sur la blancheur et le racisme quotidien. Ce regard nuancé sur les pratiques de mise en commun mettra en lumière un projet révolutionnaire qui se veut non hiérarchique, inclusif, ouvert et autonome, tout en contribuant aux débats sur la blancheur et le racisme dans les organisations situées à gauche du spectre gauche-droite.

Cette discussion vise à partager avec les participant-e-s les expériences de la tradition du « forum » en Turquie, qui est une forme d'action et de mobilisation de la démocratie directe, notamment lors de leur réémergence pendant le « mouvement de Gezi ».

Juin 2013 a été marqué par un soulèvement en Turquie connu sous le nom de « mouvement de Gezi », déclenché par la résistance populaire contre la démolition du « Parc Gezi » à Istanbul. Le mouvement a rapidement évolué vers une critique plus vaste de l’autoritarisme, adoptant des pratiques de démocratie directe et d’organisation horizontale. Cependant, face à la répression systématique de l’État et à la réduction de l’espace alloué à la politique radicale, la dynamique de subjectivation politique issue de « Gezi » a été déplacée vers les localités, où elle s’est matérialisée sous forme de « forums. »

Ces forums ont d’abord servi de refuge, mais, progressivement ils ont catalysé une nouvelle sociabilité urbaine et ont nourri des initiatives communautaires, tout en explorant leur rôle dans la transformation des pratiques politiques et des mobilisations collectives. En tant qu’incubateurs d’actions collectives, ces forums ont eu un impact majeur, mais leur évolution et leur retrait mettent en lumière les défis inhérents à la pérennisation d’une politique participative et émancipatrice.

En discutant de la dynamique de la montée et du repli de la mobilisation de masse après « Gezi », notre activité vise à remettre en question, la capacité des forums et des organisations horizontales à soutenir une culture démocratique alternative face aux contraintes politiques et aux oppressions étatiques contemporaines.

Depuis le 5 novembre aux États-Unis, la mobilisation n’a pas cessé de se développer. Toutefois, les attaques sont sévères et elles viennent de tous les côtés. Alors que l’ère Trump 2.0 redéfinit les contours de la droite radicale contemporaine, comment la gauche américaine voit-elle son combat ?

De manière générale, la gauche américaine a reculé aux dernières élections. L’organisation Democratic Socialists of América (DSA) a vu sa présence à la Chambre des représentants se réduire ainsi qu’à celle dans les États, alors qu’elle avait fait des percées non négligeables. Seule la Palestinienne Rashida Tlaib fut réélue sur la bannière de DSA chez les démocrates.

Nous avons réuni des personnes engagées qui présentent des points de vue à partir de positions différentes au sein de la gauche américaine. Michael Pelias, principal organisateur de la première conférence de la gauche américaine à New York au lendemain de la pandémie, va présenter les discussions en cours concernant au sein d’un nouveau comité radical en vue de tenir une conférence unitaire en mars 2026. Julian Lattimore, chargé de campagne pour la Fondation Rosa Luxemburg du bureau de New York témoignera de la mobilisation des réseaux sociaux. Enfin, Tanya Vyhovsky, membre de DSA, élue à nouveau au sénat du Vermont sur la bannière du Parti progressiste du Vermont, fondé notamment par Bernie Sanders, présentera les perspectives qu’envisage les organisations politiques américaines au lendemain de la deuxième victoire de Trump.

En 2018 et 2019, les soulèvements populaires qui ont abouti à la destitution d’Omar al-Bachir, au pouvoir pendant 30 ans, avaient ouvert la voie à une transformation démocratique porteuse d’espoirs pour le pays. Pendant la révolution, l’introduction de modèles décentralisés d’organisation, comme les comités de quartier, avait mobilisé différentes franges de la population qui ont participé activement à la reconstruction. Mais la guerre déclenchée le 15 avril 2023 a plongé le pays dans la pire crise humanitaire enregistrée de l’histoire. 

Selon les Nations Unies, la guerre civile au Soudan a fait, jusqu’ici, plus de 20 000 victimes et au moins 12 millions de personnes déplacées, dont 3,2 millions dans les pays voisins. La capitale, Khartoum, qui accueillait jadis une société civile vibrante et engagée, est désormais une ville fantôme. Pour plusieurs personnes qui avaient été aux premières lignes de la révolution, la situation est invivable.

Pourtant, la diaspora soudanaise continue de faire vivre l’esprit de la révolution et de s’organiser pour soutenir la paix, la démocratie et la reconstruction du pays. Au cœur de cette guerre sanglante se trouvent l’histoire impériale de la région, les ratés de la diplomatie internationale, l’effondrement de l’économie traditionnelle au profit de l’industrie aurifère et l’interminable crise socioéconomique. Or quelles sont les perspectives de paix pour le Soudan aujourd’hui? Et comment soutenir les efforts de la société civile qui a été forcée à l’exil?

In 2018 and 2019, the popular uprisings led to the end of Omar al-Bashir’s 30-year reign and paved the way for a hopeful democratic transformation. During the revolution, decentralized models of organization, such as neighbourhood committees, created vibrant spaces for building and resisting which mobilized large segments of the population.  But the war that broke out on April 15, 2023, plunged the country into the worst humanitarian crisis in recorded history. 

According to the United Nations, the civil war has so far claimed more than 20,000 lives and displaced at least 12 million people, including 3.2 million in neighbouring countries. Once home to a vibrant and committed civil society, the capital, Khartoum, is now a ghost town. For many people who were on the front lines of the revolution, the situation is unbearable.

Yet the Sudanese diaspora continues to keep the spirit of the revolution alive and to organize in support of peace, democracy and the reconstruction of the country. The region's imperial history, the failings of international diplomacy, the collapse of the traditional economy in favour of the gold industry and the interminable socio-economic crisis are at the heart of this devastating war. But what are the prospects for peace in Sudan today? And how can we support the efforts of civil society in exile?

This panel, organized by the editorial board of Spectre, will rely on and deepen Social Reproduction Theory (SRT) as we use it to help us think through key elements of our conjuncture. Aaron Jaffe will use SRT to think the emergence of capitalist societies in the midst of the ravages of primitive accumulation, pinpointing how earlier racisms and misogyny were then borne out in distinctively capitalist manners.Thinking the ongoing and evolving effects of this transition will help SRT to pinpoint what a freer, post-capitalist condition would look like. Sue Ferguson will use SRT to shine a bright light on the scholasticide in Palestine, and then offer some critical reflections on how the SRT framework can be used to theorize settler colonialism more broadly. Alan Sears will focus on our labor powers' unavoidable embodiment, and rely on SRT to situate this embodiment in the midst of ecological relations. This theoretical deepening of SRT via a relational ecology will then be used to criticize the degraded and degrading ecological relations developed by capital. Finally, pointing to the consistent and deepening far-right commitments to developing a politics centered around explicit anti-queer and anti-trans violence, Holly Lewis will diagnose the situation and rely on SRT to point to a liberatory politics.

Fighting neocolonial invasion, Ukraine’s destiny is in the hands of its armed people.  But its victory and reconstruction are also under deliberation by international agents.  Preexisting and new challenges can be either resolved or exacerbated in the process. Ukraine—and the world—is in desperate need of a new social contract with people and nature at its core. This panel presents 3 women who have written the history of this struggle and are shaping its outcome.

Russia’s invasion in 2022 shocked a world unfamiliar with Ukraine’s independence struggle.  Competing perspectives portray Ukraine/Russia:  one which claims common origins and inevitable joint identity, and another which stresses differences in political traditions and national aspirations. 

Authors Maria Popova and Oxana Shevel developed the theory of “entangled histories, diverging states”.  They show how Ukraine and Russia, evolving through historic periods, came to see their goals differently.  Post 1991, Ukraine shaped its vision of a civic identity, not ethnic but defined by the personal dignity [гідність – hidnist] of participation in national liberation and nation building. By contrast, in this period Russian elites of whatever shade failed to develop a vision of a civic society that could let go of imperial claims. 

Yulia Yurchenko, working with Ukrainians at the front today, shows how they are forging a route to survival that demands renewed global and national relations: Ukraine needs sustainable security.  Its people are clearer than ever that the healing of their devastated land and fabric of community will be a continuing revolution that will rewrite social structures.

In 2024 and looking ahead, Ukraine’s challenges are overwhelming. When Russia invaded on February 24, 2022, Ukraine was already one of the poorest and most indebted countries in Europe, weathered by numerous economic crises, fiscal challenges in the domain of public services financing, and nearly 8 years of war with Russia and its proxies in Donbas and Crimea.  The ongoing war strains state and municipal budgets, while dislocation of the labour force and infrastructure destruction (including water and energy), ecological contamination, landmines make economic and everyday activities a challenge.

By February 2024 the total amount of documented damage to Ukraine’s infrastructure was estimated at $155 billion. Building a resilient deeply sustainable – economically, socially, and environmentally – country requires a large-scale coordinated approach and constructive multi-stakeholder social dialogue. 

Many initiatives are already underway and many more are still to follow. In the FEPS funded Project titled “Progressive Paths to Rebuild Ukraine” we draw on existing plans, initiatives, and evidence to assess the state of the economy and society, identify strengths and vulnerabilities, survey trade unions for assessment of current and foreseeable needs in concrete sectors and collate 5 expert briefs for consolidated, progressive policy recommendations (on education, housing, healthcare, social policy, and impoverished motherhood) that would assure a resilient recovery, animate IDPs, deliver productive mobilisation of female workforce reserve, mend communities, and incentivise refugees to return. 

War is never inevitable. Russia's Putin made calculated decisions to invade Ukraine in 2014 and 2022. He could have instead continued pursuing the goal of establishing control over Ukraine through other means, or he could have grudgingly accepted the reality of Ukraine's distancing from Russia. 

We develop an argument of an escalatory cycle, addressing whether the divergence between Ukraine and Russia was pre-determined and whether it was pre-ordained that divergence would produce a collision course between the two states, rather than a mutual modus vivendi. Both divergence and ultimate collision were likely, but not inevitable. There were plausible alternative scenarios that could have averted war. Invasion in 2022 was a logical step in the escalatory cycle, but throughout the post-Soviet period there were critical junctures where either Ukraine or Russia could have swerved and pursued a different trajectory.

The logic centers on the compatibility between Russia's and it neighbours' foreign and domestic policies. When the vassals pursue parallel foreign policy and refrain from developing "anti-Russian" identities domestically, Russia does not need to exert its imperial power. 

Compatibility with Ukraine would have been more likely if both countries had developed similar regimes. An authoritarian trajectory for Ukraine would have meant a more pro-Russian foreign and domestic policy. Had Yanukovych prevailed during the 2004 Orange Revolution, or crushed Euromaidan in 2014, he would have entrenched himself and a "deal" with Putin.

Alternatively, if Russia had de-imperialized and accepted the sovereignty of its formal vassals, a collision course also would have been unlikely.

À travers leurs campagnes respectives, le film décortique le système électoral et ses nombreux dysfonctionnements : difficultés supplémentaires pour les femmes et les personnes racisées, mode de scrutin déficient, financement inéquitable, poids des médias et des sondages.

Dans son documentaire, Jenny Cartwright jette un regard caustique et décapant sur un système politique qui n’offre pas les mêmes chances à tou·tes. Si la course semble perdue d’avance pour une majorité des coureurs, c’est que nous sommes les perdants du jeu électoral.

The documentary film “Terra Vista” depicts a community settled by Brazil’s Landless Workers' Movement (MST), in the cacao region of Bahia, Brazil, at the forefront of a historical process of resistance to the hegemonic and neocolonial system of cacao production. Marking a historic victory, the movement occupied the farm on March 8, 1992, and after five evictions, won the property for social interest, overcoming opposition from landowners and local colonels. They began an agroecological transition in 2000, reforesting the land, abandoning the use of chemical inputs and adopting regenerative practices. Since then, 92% of the riparian forest of the Aliança River and 80% of its springs have been restored. 

The film features unpublished interviews with members, including some of its first occupiers, and portrays how the process of agroecological transition began and continues today. The trajectories and reflections of the community members expose their working agenda, which fuses social justice, food sovereignty and ecological restoration. The film was produced by Brasil de Fato and the UC Santa Barbara (available on YouTube) 

Power relations between classes, races and countries are fundamental questions for understanding the most urgent challenges we face, from poverty and hunger to the climate and ecological crisis. Conversely, some of the most potent alternatives also tackle these issues in a multidimensional manner, and Terra Vista stands as a reference. This is the topic of my doctoral research as I conduct an ethnography with Terra Vista (january-december 2024). I was co-director of the film and will conduct the discussion.

Depuis vingt-cinq ans l’écosocialisme a connu un développement remarquable. D’un courant théorique peu connu et sans grande influence politique, il est devenu le cœur battant de la proposition socialiste en cette troisième décennie du 21è siècle. Le lien qu’il propose entre crise écologique et accumulation capitaliste est accepté par de grand pans du mouvement environnemental; sa critique du cul de sac que constitue le capitalisme vert et l’illusion d’une transition qui ne serait pas en rupture avec le système actuel est prise au sérieux par beaucoup de militants-es progressistes; des intellectuel-lles de grande qualité comme John Bellamy Foster, Nancy Fraser, ou Andreas Malm ont contribué à lui donner une fondation théorique solide et féconde. 

Mais la proposition écosocialiste s’avère encore insuffisante au niveau de la stratégie : comment passer de la situation de polycrise actuelle à un changement fondamental ? Comment développer un mouvement de masse pour la justice climatique et sociale alors que l’extrême-droite est en ascension ? Comment rallier les classes ouvrières et laborieuses à la perspective écosocialiste ? Quel rôle pour un syndicalisme écologique et militant dans un tel combat ? Quelles seraient les forces sociales alliées? 

Pour engager les débats sur ces questions nous proposons deux ateliers. Le premier, intitulé (Re)Penser l’écosocialisme-quelques questions stratégiques, porterait sur les alliances de classes et la question de la décroissance. Le deuxième, intitulé (Re)Penser l’écosocialisme-quelques questions tactiques, porterait sur l’écosyndicalisme et les rapports avec le mouvement environnemental.

In the last decade, we have seen the resurgence of global authoritarianism as we witnessed the parade of right-wing governments, the strengthening and expansion of extreme right-wing parties, punitive and repressive policies, hate speeches, and nationalist, reactionary, racist, neo-fascist, and anti-feminist ideologies. Not only are states becoming authoritarian, but society is too. In mass media and social networks, in advertising and propaganda, we are constantly exposed to images and sounds that feed our minds with reactionary discourses and aesthetics. Authoritarianism shapes mentalities and mobilizes people on deep psychological and emotional levels. How can we resist this authoritarian mobilization of affects? What aesthetic and emotional strategies can we employ to counteract and subvert it? 

We need other languages, images, sounds, experiences, and sensibilities to inspire people to confront these global authoritarian tendencies and to show the power of our utopian imaginations. In this spirit, the book  compiles 50 first-hand accounts from activists, collectives, movements, artists, and scholars from around the globe, showing us the creativity to subvert authoritarian ideologies. In the form of images, songs, memes, poems, occupation of spaces, symbols, graffiti, murals, and stickers, people craft aesthetics of resistance that contribute to confront authoritarian tendencies.  These strategies address feelings of frustration, hopelessness, and fatalism on a personal level, but also help develop alliances and solidarities that reclaim visions of anti-authoritarian futures.
